When, last week, we wrote about 56% of Americans stating they would be OK living in a "tiny home", this isn't what we had in mind.
But apparently, in L.A., being homeless has its perks. What better way for California to help get its budget crisis under control than to pay for minimalist structures, known as “tiny homes”, to the total cost of $130,000 each, for its homeless. What was once an idea to house the homeless in "emergency shelters" has now - as things do in liberal states - turned into "expensive development projects with access roads, underground utilities and concrete foundations," according to the LA Times.
LA has opened one "village" and has planned five more. Mayor Eric Garcetti has championed the program as a way for the city to stop neglecting its homeless - an issue that was brought up in a recent federal lawsuit against the city.
The total cost of the first village is now about $5.2 million. Additional projects that are set to open in April are "projected" to cost less, but we'll believe it when we see it. The city says for those villages, it expects to spend "at least $82,000 per shelter". The contract attracted only one bid, which came in more than $400,000 over expectations.

Indoor plumbing is extra, of course.
It’s about the feelz. They look so cool in Sunset magazine from the porch of a winery. All cozy and small.
Uh, you really meant you CAN’T buy ANYTHING in NC for that kind of money. Right? Wink, wink.
-Close the border,
-Don't pretend that encouraging drug use is a public good,
-Stop the COVID lockdown that is shuttering JOBS!
The average home in California is getting close to a million dollars. 130,000 in California is not much at all.
That’s what our government is for, right?
Yep, it’s for those connected to make bank whilst the rest of us take it up the keister.
Some places 5th wheels are tiny houses. J/S. We know two different couples that tow their 5th wheels around the country. You have to be willing and able to let go of a lot of “stuff” when you make that jump. They seem to be doing just fine.
How the heck does it cost 130K to build a house the size of my shed? Somebody is making bank
***************
The government pols and bureaucrats don’t care because its not their money and they get to claim that they’re helping people. Big spending also justifies big organizational empires. And naturally the contractors love the system. Its win-win for everyone except the taxpayers.
As earlier but modified for TN:
Uh, you really meant you CAN’T buy ANYTHING in Tennessee for that kind of money. Right? Wink, wink.
Before we had “homeless” we had “flop houses” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flophouse) but liberals thought these inexpensive places were beneath the dignity of those with little means and regulated them out of businesses.
The same brains that shut down these low cost places to get off the street also closed mental hospitals and dumped the patient back into society and for many to a life on the streets.
The government created the problem and they are trying to solve it the only way then know how - spend other people’s money.
(My guess is that someone well connected is providing these disposable homes at $130,000 a pop)
Prediction all these “homes’ will be non-livable within five years.
You can bet the construction co. is likely Garcetti Constr or another official.
And I’ll bet the land is purchased from another official for top dollar.
They have built exactly the same type of “village” 2 miles from our house in Tacoma. It is the second one in the city. They were built for approximately the same ammount of money per structure as in LA. This is what the socialists areound here want for all of us.
Despite having a central structure for going to the bathroom and cleaning up... you can smell the place before you go past it in the car. The marijuana cloud, booze, garbage, urine, and feces from people who can’t be bothered to use the provided facility stinks up the entire area.
They literally have a shuttle bus that drops them off at nearby intersections with their gas cans and pan handling signs and supplies. At least there is a central location where merchants could retreive their stollen shopping carts if they still wanted them after being filled with garbage and hapless pets.
Within a week of the first one opening, one mentally deranged bum shot another one in the head and killed him. Despite white bums being much more prevalent around here, minority bums and women get preference.
The insanity at the core of this story is reminiscent of an old politically incorrect joke told among physicians. “Try not to accept anyone in your practice who lives in a trailer park or anyone who has ever lived in LA”
Why don’t they just go buy sheds from Home Depot?
$130k for a hovel on the shtetl. Somebody’s probably getting rich.
Insanity.
Not that they SHOULD give free housing to anyone, but a bunch of shipping containers with one door removed and a bunch of portapotties would be smarter.
What’s the name of the contractor who’s related to Eric Garcetti?.
Nothing in California unless kickbacks are included.
