Fast-spreading Covid variant detected in South Africa - similar to one found in UK

A SEVERE VARIANT of the coronavirus has been detected in South Africa which could explain the rapid spread of a second wave that affects younger people, the health minister said.

Known as the 501.V2 Variant, it was identified by South African researchers and details have been sent to the World Health Organization, Zwelini Mkhize said in a statement.

A team led by the Kwazulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform (KRISP), has sequenced hundreds of virus samples since the pandemic began, and “noticed that a particular variant has increasingly dominated the findings of the samples collected in the past two months,” he added.

It’s been reported that 88% of the latest results in the Western Cape province are from the new Covid-19 variant.

South African doctors have remarked that more patients are younger, and do not always have other conditions that amplify the virus’ effect, but are nonetheless suffering from more severe forms of Covid-19.

That “strongly suggests that the current second wave we are experiencing is being driven by this new variant,” Mkhize concluded.

Ask how many health care providers on this site have had or plan to get the vaccine. The 3 practicing hospital based physicians in my family ( including yours truly ) have already had it. We range in age from 20’s to 60 with some comorbidities it is it mandatory. all of us who stand at bedside and spend our time in close proximity have been vaccinated. i have seen similar reports from the other physicians on this board

My family member has the option to take now or wait...

Works for a large testing lab—not spending time with patients directly, but still considered essential personnel/frontline...so qualifies if wants vaccine.

I'm acquainted with a family in New Orleans whose elderly grandmother died of pneumonia a few months ago. The hospital initially listed her cause of death as COVID, even though she was never diagnosed with it; all her tests were negative.

The family vigorously and publicly disputed the call and they were successful.
