A SEVERE VARIANT of the coronavirus has been detected in South Africa which could explain the rapid spread of a second wave that affects younger people, the health minister said.
Known as the 501.V2 Variant, it was identified by South African researchers and details have been sent to the World Health Organization, Zwelini Mkhize said in a statement.
A team led by the Kwazulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform (KRISP), has sequenced hundreds of virus samples since the pandemic began, and “noticed that a particular variant has increasingly dominated the findings of the samples collected in the past two months,” he added.
It’s been reported that 88% of the latest results in the Western Cape province are from the new Covid-19 variant.
South African doctors have remarked that more patients are younger, and do not always have other conditions that amplify the virus’ effect, but are nonetheless suffering from more severe forms of Covid-19.
That “strongly suggests that the current second wave we are experiencing is being driven by this new variant,” Mkhize concluded.

Yes it is and isn't that interesting. It's almost impossible to get any figures on CFR, which should be a known number, and only a little easier to get figures on IFR which are statistics derived from some amount of speculation.
At any rate, adding the numbers for those from 70 to 74 yrs old to all those 75 and up shouldn't change things that drastically.
It's also interesting that the poster who claimed a 24% fatality rate for 75+ has not answered a simple question about the seeming disparity between his figures and the CDCs. I wasn't disagreeing with him or challenging him I just wanted to know why the shocking difference.

That’s not really from statistical science is it? I thought everybody from the media to Fauci dropped those initial worst case predictions back in March. By April they were clearly not panning out.

For all who read this...EBB TIDE sent me a private email stating that I have been disciplined for anesthetizing the wrong eye on an 80 year old female. The libel not withstanding, it is this exact bullying and targeting in quiet that makes ebb a total and complete coward.
For the record, my license has no discipline and I have never anesthetized a wrong site. This is the level of narcissism on full display and the tacit threats that someone who tells the truth deals with.

I did answer, and the 24% is not a prediction, it is a world wide statistic, as I said, I did concede that 1/5 or 20% in Florida is likely accurate — albeit it not much better -> there is still a glaring exponential difference between CoVID deaths in this age range vs deaths from vaccine (zero)
