Britain's richest man and Brexit supporter Jim Ratcliffe has abandoned plans to build a new SUV in the United Kingdom, dealing another blow to a car industry that has already been battered by the country's exit from the European Union and the pandemic.
Ratcliffe is the founder of Ineos, a chemicals company, and has a fortune worth nearly $28 billion, according to Bloomberg's Billionaires Index. Ineos said in a statement on Tuesday that its first vehicle, the Grenadier 4x4, will be manufactured at a plant in Hambach, France, that the company is buying from Daimler's (DMLRY) Mercedes-Benz. "Hambach presented us with a unique opportunity that we simply could not ignore: to buy a modern automotive manufacturing facility with a world-class workforce," Ratcliffe said in a statement. The SUV, which is named after the London pub in which it was conceived, will enter production late next year. Ineos had been planning to produce the SUV at a new plant in Bridgend, Wales, creating 500 jobs. Ratcliffe said in statement last year that the decision to base production in Wales was a "significant expression of confidence in British manufacturing." Prime Minister Boris Johnson echoed that sentiment at the time, saying that manufacturing the Grenadier in Wales was "a vote of confidence in UK expertise" that would make sure "we keep our status as a pioneer in new vehicle technologies."

How are ANY SUVs needed in the EU or Britain?
How can building a SUV in France "deal a blow" to the British car industry?!
I mean: A single vehicle?!
Regards,
The subtext from CNN is that this chap is a hypocrite... i.e.,. he backed Brexit but he himself doesn’t want to do business in Britain. Frankly, that’s typical CNN crap. There’s no hypocrisy in thinking that Brexit is the best thing for Britain while also thinking that one project or another isn’t a good fit for the various options available in Britain. Is everyone who voted for Brexit a hypocrite if they, say, go on vacation on the continent? It’s pretty ridiculous to say that they are. Are all the Democrats who are gung-ho about teachers’ unions and public schools hypocrites when they enroll their own kids in private schools? Maybe, but CNN certainly wouldn’t say that.
In The northern part and in Wales you need an SUV
It can when the factory and the parts ecosystem will not be in the uk. This, along with Toyota moving out means more parts manufacturing is moving as well.
But the article constantly refers to "a SUV" (note use of SINGULAR rather than of PLURAL).
How can the manufacture of a single godd*mn vehicle have any substantial impact?
I mean: A SINGLE vehicle. You know: a chassis, four wheels, etc. Total value: $30,000.
Regards,
This explains why he’s a billionaire.
Because if you read the article, it is that this is the flagship of the company and instead of building a factory in Wales, it will be in france
Bring back the Austin Healey, MG or Triumph.
Just don’t use Lucas electric systems.
But the article repeatedly refers only to "a" SUV - as in: SINGULAR.
If they meant that they were going to build a factory capable of manufacturing thousands of such vehicles, they should have said: "...will build a make of a SUV..."
I believe that the term is "make" or "model" of a vehicle, yes?
Regards,
Many moons ago, I bought a new MG - what blast to drive...when it was running.
I sold it after 18 months.
Hot, loud and you got wet if it rained.
The good old days...
