Al-Shabaab is as bad as they come. They are a hard core Al Queda offshoot that has become a operationally and tactically sophisticated guerrilla organization that is well on its way to fielding an actual army. They effectively control large chunks of southern Somalia and have planned and successfully conducted combined arms attacks against Somali, U.S, and African Union positions in Somalia and Kenya.

It is not surprising that they are branching out to lone wolf attackers. It’s a cheap and effective way to strike at us, with almost no investment aside from propaganda required and no cost to them if they fail.
