As top Washington negotiators reach for a long-delayed agreement on COVID-19 relief, rank-and-file Democrats appear increasingly resigned to having to drop, for now, a scaled-back demand for fiscal relief for states and local governments whose budgets have been thrown out of balance by the pandemic.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., spoke with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin by phone Monday evening and continues to press for help for struggling states and localities. But top Democrat allies of Joe Biden came out in support of a $748 billion plan offered by a bipartisan group of lawmakers and hinted they won't insist on a pitched battle for state and local aid now.
“We cannot afford to wait any longer to act. This should not be Congress’ last COVID relief bill, but it is a strong compromise that deserves support from both Republicans and Democrats in the Senate," said Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del. “We cannot leave for the holidays without getting relief to those Americans who need it.”

I’d support relief for non chain restaurants and businesses.
I try to explain the incredible corruption in the district of criminals this way
These politicians can write $1 billion check any day of the week
Why? Aren’t those franchisee small business and why shouldn’t they be given compensation for a government taking?
Not according to NV gov sissypants. Turtle and Trump are behind the stalemate. He pointed fingers Sunday when he extended our latest mandate to 1/15/2021. With the threat stronger restrictions if we keep misbehaving. Get in line or get in trouble. Wait until your father gets home! 😱
Those businesses are hurt by their governors and mayors. Those states and localities should reimburse.
Without stimulus checks this thing isn’t going anywhere
They’ll get it passed after January 20th.
They put state and local aid and liability relief in a separate bill so each side dropped their most contentious issue for now.
And, I bet the Dems will be more reasonable about dropping the voting rules modifications, such as harvesting, that Nancy wanted to make national law in the bill. After all, the “shock and awe” cheat during this election shows that that nickel-dime stuff isn’t really necessary. /S
But who is going to cover California’s losses from fraud of the unemployment system? /s
Let them get the relief directly from the Federal government. It's not getting to them through governors like Andrew Cuomo or Gavin Newsom.
What a tragedy!
I know that, now that the elections are over, Nancy, you were so focused on keeping campaign promises and helping out all of the little people across the country. What a shame that it’s just not working out and you’re forced to keep all those billions inside the beltway. You must be so disappointed!
Is there anything we peons can do to ease your sorrow? How about a beverage? Sorry, we’re closed.
Great. Now let these state and local governments start operating the same way the "non-essential" businesses inside their borders are forced to operate after being shut down by some totalitarian @sshole in government.
the relief didn’t get to the mom and pops, and that’s whose going out of business now. Drive thru chains are thriving. The left like the consolidation of power.
Now this go around is another thing and I understand that the states are shutting everything down but they are absolutely dead broke. I am not asking for more money just to open up fully. Sooner or later they will have to because here is not enough money for the harm that has already been done.
Not a penny to the state and local governments that caused their own fiscal problems!
I propose alternatively that Congress immediately balance the federal budget, including all coronavirus, contingency operations, emergency, mandatory, discretionary, extraneous, and other spending, for the fiscal year of 2021. Congress can accomplish this task principally through the legalization of vast sectors of previously legal economic activity and through drastic cuts to every category of federal spending.
Where are they getting all this money?
