A lawyer trademarked every possible replacement for "Redskins," in order to extort a big payoff, which is why Washington has no nickname. By announcing their intent, Cleveland is inviting the same treatment, unless they've already preemptively secured a new name.
Any team or school with even a remotely-related native-American name ought to have done that already--Braves, Black Hawks, Warriors, Hawkeyes, Seminoles, Sioux, etc.--because they're coming for you.

I think the solution is for the teams to adopt names of various groups of white people, for example, the Cleveland Walloons. I’ll bet Walloons would feel honored.

I’m willing to surrender on this one. All sports teams should be named after iconic white exemplars of strength, skill and tenaciousness. This is the only way to avoid upsetting minority groups.
