US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Robert Redfield has accepted an advisory committee's recommendation that the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine may be given to people ages 16 and older, meaning that shots of the vaccine can now be administered in the United States.
The decision comes the same day that the first batch of vaccines was loaded onto trucks at a Pfizer plant in Portage, Michigan, and shipped out across the country on Sunday morning.
Freight trucks carrying about 184,275 vials of vaccine departed the plant, and the combined 189 boxes of vaccine vials are expected to arrive in all 50 states on Monday.
Another 3,900 vials are expected to ship later Sunday to United States territories, and 400 boxes packed with about 390,000 vials will ship Monday to arrive on Tuesday. There are five doses of vaccine per vial, according to Pfizer.
The excitement surrounding the shipment even brought out small groups of cheering spectators. At Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where the vaccine was loaded onto a FedEx cargo plane.

Doses should be delivered to all vaccination sites identified by states, such as local pharmacies, within three weeks, federal officials said. About 3 million doses ship this week. Stock is already rolling.

Not that I am aware of. The technology used (mRNA) was developed with AIDS research funding over many years, but it is a general technical approach, not tied to HIV specifically.
MRNA vaccines provide the instructions for the immune system to respond to a specific threat, rather than the approach of traditional vaccines, which expose the threat itself (live, weakened, killed or fragmentary), to stimulate the immune system to generate those instructions on its own. It cuts out a step.
MSN separately reports:
“Moncef Slaoui, the scientific head of Operation Warp Speed, said Sunday that the U.S. plans to distribute about 40 million doses of coronavirus vaccine by the end of 2020.
“We plan to have about 40 million doses of the vaccine available to us and distributed in the US by the end of this year,” Slaoui said on “Fox News Sunday,” adding that the U.S. would distribute up to 80 million doses through January.
“All in all, we hope to have immunized 100 million people which would be the long-term care facility people, the elderly people with comorbidities, the frontline workers, the health care workers,” he added. “We will have immunized about 100 million people by the first quarter of 2021.”
Asked by host Chris Wallace about the point at which Americans would have herd immunity, Slaoui said “we need to have immunized about 75 to 80 percent” to reach that point.”
As a practical matter though, after 100 million, the high risk populations will be protected, and the rest of the population has a lower death rate from COVID than flu - it should not justify any continued lockdown restrictions.

And the ‘volunteers’ will be those that were officially designated ‘essential’ (construction workers etc) what better ‘guinea pigs’.... I had ‘laughed’ earlier that the reason all the so called ‘dead end jobs’ were important was because ‘we’ were expendable.
If the Govt ORDERS all to get the shot, Ayn Rand will have hit it on the head(again) about make enough laws and rules we will ALL be criminals... I am definitely anti mask but chances of being charged etc are sketchy BUT a mandatory shot.....etc etc ... will definitely make a criminal of me.

The Hill reports:
“Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Alex Azar said Sunday that nursing home residents across the U.S. would be receiving the coronavirus vaccine in the days ahead, and added that the Trump administration aimed to have most of the population of care home residents vaccinated by Christmas.”
That is going to send COVID death rates, and ICU cases, plummeting. As the high risk populations (that account for the great bulk of serious cases and deaths) become immune, the disease will become an insignificant threat to to the public health.
Nursing home residents will be largely immune in January, and the rest of the highest risk elderly, and those with co-morbidities, in February (from vaccinations started in January).
Even if Biden should take office on 20 January, and immediately start shipping our vaccine to “more worthy” recipients overseas, much lower mortality rates in the USA will already be baked into the cake.

Some studies of COVID-19 showed herd immunity effects after only 15-20% had been infected.
One reason proposed, is that many people may already have cross-immunity to COVID-19, from previous exposure to other coronaviruses.
Another factor cited in those studies, is that not everyone is of equal value as a vector to spread the disease. High contact people like cashiers have a much greater impact on spread than low contact retirees cloistered away at home most days.
Those high contact people are disproportionally likely to have already been exposed, and will also be prioritized “Front Line Workers” in the vaccination program.
