NYC Holocaust survivors light the Chanukah lights at the end of a lonely year

Their youths were stolen by Adolf Hitler and the Nazis — and now some New York Holocaust survivors say they’ve had another precious year ripped away by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chanukah begins Thursday, and the light-filled holiday won’t be as bright as other years, when Holocaust survivors gathered close and sang with family and watched the young ones open presents.

This year, some of New York’s thousands of Holocaust survivors will go it alone, lighting lonely menorahs nightly in their apartments. Others will get together with family, but maintain a safe distance, so as not to be killed by a new, invisible enemy.

“What can I say — it’s a crazy Chanukah,” said Rina Nudel, an 88-year-old widow who was nearly killed in a Nazi-run concentration camp in Poland at age 10. Her mother saved her by shoving her into a group of Jews being released from the Janowska concentration camp.

Nudel, who lives in Midwood and was a nurse before retiring more than a decade ago, plans to go to her son’s house in Connecticut for Chanukah — but when there, she will maintain distance from him and his wife.

Of course ripped away by politicians, not ripped away by the COVID-19 pandemic

Eventually covid 19 will probably surpass Asian/Hong Kong flu (68-69) deaths of 1-4 million, already has the low end of the range. But as a "survivor", how different. In 68 government might have been in a panic about Vietnam, riots and student protests. The flu? That was just an illness which killed all age groups, but which as a society we knew we'd prevail over. Ask some friends upwards of 65 or so their remembrances of the Asian Flu. They'll probably look at you with a blank expression. But maybe it's me. I don't remember the 57-58 Asian Flu either.
