Thieves have targeted a Russian “doomsday” plane, the military aircraft that would be used by top officials, including Vladimir Putin, in case of a nuclear war.
The robbery of the Ilyushin-80, a mobile command post specially designed to keep officials alive and in command of the military during a nuclear conflict, took place at an airfield in southern Russia, state media reported.
The thieves managed to open the highly classified aircraft’s cargo hatch and make off with 39 pieces of radio equipment. They have not been caught.
Interior ministry officials in the city of Taganrog confirmed that a plane at Taganrog Aviation Scientific and Technical Complex was robbed, although they did not specify which one.
Ren-TV, a Russian television station, reported that police had found shoe and fingerprints aboard the aircraft.

Was it parked on the street?
Let’s hope they have better control of their doomsday weapons.
If its on the street, its in stock.
In Philadelphia, yes.
The pilot went in for a cheesesteak sandwich.
Only out of the plan for 5 min.
They took the hubcaps too.
I would be checking the base commanders bank accounts.
It might have been Hey joey see that plane it’s been parked for weeks with out any body around.
Lets go rip it off.
Ordinary thieves, or were they specialists after special equipment? (Launch codes?)
This may not have been just an ordinary robbery.
Russian scrappers....
read the story fir cryin out loud
Taganrog. Right near Ukraine. Wonder if the Ukrainians took a quick swipe at a very sensitive aircraft to send Putin a message?
Similar to act 1 of a James Bond movie. Anybody seen Soros?
Have they checked Craigslist for the stolen parts?
Yes, pilots came back, and the plane was stripped, on blocks, with the radios gone.
Happens all the time in that neighborhood.
Would have been funny if they stole the tires and left it on blocks.
Well you can bet it wasn’t the FBI or CIA, who couldn’t find shit on their shoes.
Russia isn’t that stupid anymore. It is probably an old Soviet version of the aircraft. They stole junk radios. It would be like getting ahold of an Air Force one from the 1980s.
“This may not have been just an ordinary robbery.”
Ordinary thieves to high tech ones do not go after high risk stuff such as this. Plus the stuff stolen is hot, red hot, making it hard to sell.
I’d say they have a good old fashioned case of espionage on their hands. What I find difficult to understand, is why are they publicizing something so embarrassing?
