McConnell says Senate will pass defense bill despite veto threat

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said on Monday that the Senate will take up and pass a mammoth defense bill despite a looming veto showdown with President Trump.

McConnell mentioned the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) as he outlined the items left on Congress's year-end to-do list as lawmakers prepare to leave Washington for the year as soon as next week.

"We also expect to receive and pass a conference report on the annual defense authorization," McConnell said about the massive policy bill.

The GOP leader's remarks come as the House is poised to vote on the bill on Tuesday, paving the way for the Senate to pass it as soon as this week.

The bill, which has passed for 59 years in a row, has garnered a veto threat from Trump because it does not repeal Section 230, a legal shield for tech companies that has become a prime punching bag for Trump and his allies.

McConnell did not address Trump’s veto threat during his floor remarks.

The House and Senate both passed their initial bills with a veto-proof majority.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) has said he believes they would have the votes in the House to override a veto, in what would be a first during the Trump administration.

Top Senate Republicans have been more circumspect, saying they hope the vote margin is big enough that Trump ultimately changes his mind. The Senate’s initial defense bill passed with 86 votes.

"I just think it's going to be a big vote,” said Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.).

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) gave similar comments reporters on Monday. But pressed if he would be supportive of a veto override, he demurred.

“When he vetoes it, I’ll tell you,” he said.

They will override the veto, 100% guarantee it.

Hopefully Trump does veto it and puts them on record as shills for the military industrial complex.

Go Trump!

Politicians are on the road to Hell. Enjoy your ‘perks’ while you can...eternity is a LONG time; just ask Kennedy and McCain.

Section 230 removal is a rider; it in fact has nothing to do with the military, but it does, in final analysis, have much to do with national security.

Riders have been added to bills since the beginning of the Republic and those very same senators have voted for riders in bills since they have been in office. So therefore, they are liars to claim to be offended by it being placed in the bill. Sorry. If your senator chimes in with that complaint, WHOEVER HE IS, he is Big Tech’s bitch, he has been bought off.

Virtually every one of them has been bought off by someone somewhere; if not the military industrial complex, a foreign nation, a pharmaceutical company(ies), Wall Street or one of the big six companies who own most of the country. There’s a reason politicians spend millions for a job that pays ~$175,000 and “retire” as multi-millionaires.

It’s analogous to the reason “The Pentagon” hates Trump; general officers retire to the leadership and boards of major defense contractors. Just look at the “leadership” of companies like SAIC, BAE, Leidos, Raytheon, Booz Allen Hamilton, Northrup-Grumman, Lockheed, et al.

The GOP Hogs are giddy that they will back to the pork barrel days of the Senate Club. The wolves and coyotes conspiring, once again, on how to carve up the sheep.

I agree with Trump on the veto. Having worked in the military industrial complex for 33 years, I can tell you that companies producing goods will stop doing so immediately. Depending on how long the fight goes on, there may be some disruption in the supply of critical goods. Having said that, there is usually plenty of flexibility in the system. When GWB was declared the winner he personally called all of the CEO’s of the bullets and bombs companies as his predecessor had literally used them all up and not replaced them. As an employee of General Dynamics I got a general broadcast email from the CEO describing the call and saying GWB had asked for maximum effort to replace expended ordinance and GWB would pay the expense after he took office. GWB did exactly that. GD went to 24 hour shifts on their powder and ordinance manufacturing operations.

A lot of people will be so afraid of life without Moribund Mitch’s majesty they’ll be too frightened to boycott the GA run-off. Not everybody though.

China Mitch is flipping off the GOP base just as much as “Read my lips” Bush did. We know what happened there.

It would be interesting if DJT took the bill apart, itemized how awful it is, published the analysis, and then asked the public whether he should veto it or not.

It would be an interesting referendum on the quality of our representation and completely underline his point about all of this.

The best time to use leverage is when we have it and right now we do. If they won’t do what’s right now they never will.
