Singapore (AFP) - Lab-grown chicken will soon be available in restaurants in Singapore, after the city-state became the first to green-light meat created without slaughtering any animals.
US start-up Eat Just said Wednesday that its meat had been approved for sale in the city-state as an ingredient in chicken nuggets.
The news marks a "breakthrough for the global food industry", said the company, as firms increasingly try to find less environmentally harmful ways of producing meat.
"I'm sure that our regulatory approval for cultured meat will be the first of many in Singapore and in countries around the globe," said Josh Tetrick, co-founder and CEO of Eat Just.
Consumption of regular meat is an environmental threat as cattle produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas, while logging forests to make way for animals destroys natural barriers against climate change.
Demand for sustainable alternatives to meat is rising due to growing consumer pressure, but other products in the market are plant-based.
Meat consumption is projected to increase over 70 percent by 2050, and lab-grown alternatives have a role to play in ensuring a safe, secure food supply, Eat Just said.
"Working in partnership with the broader agriculture sector and forward-thinking policymakers, companies like ours can help meet the increased demand for animal protein as our population climbs to 9.7 billion by 2050," said company CEO Tetrick.

Does it taste like chicken?
Whats next soilent green?
Whatever it is, it’s not chicken.
Not eating anything from a company named ‘Eat Just.’
Just ... NO!
Check out Ice Age Farmer on YouTube for their real motives.
One thing I absolutely hated when working in Singapore was company outings were difficult food-wise. No pork (offends Muslims), no beef (offends Hindus), sometimes no meat (offends some Buddhists).
Used to skip team lunches as one of their favorite places was “Vegan Burg” - processed mushrooms and soya pretending to be meat burgers.
If it tastes okay, I’d try it. I wouldn’t mind a world where animals don’t have to be raised and slaughtered, but humans could still get the protein we need.
“Singapore (AFP) - Lab-grown chicken will soon be available in restaurants...”
Yeah, but will it wake me up at daybreak with incessant crowing?
Frankenmeat.
lol
Actually if you DNA tested the meat it would without doubt come back as chicken. This is cloned cell cultures from live chickens. Biologically identical to the cells it was cloned from. For a ground and processed meat product where muscle fiber integrity is destroyed anyways by the grinding process I would take a large cash bet the average person could not tell the difference in a double blind test. As for cows they do something magical they via their 4 stomachs turn inedible grass and shrub into meat, cheese, leather and milk all useful to humans. You cannot grow soy , corn, rice, potatoes or really anything else but scrubbrush and bunch grass or paddle cacti in West Texas but the Texas longhorn can turn all of that with ease into brisket , ribs, and steaks something the green wackjobs gloss over when saying oh cows bad. My family has been in Texas Ranching since 1730s nearly 300 years of continuous cattle raising first for Spaniards then Mexico then Republic of Texas then USA then Confederates and finally back to the USA.
