Several people have been killed and a number of others injured after a car drove into pedestrians in the German city of Trier, police say.
At least two people died and 15 others were injured in the collision, which happened in a pedestrianised area of the city centre on Tuesday, Trier Mayor Wolfram Leibe said.
The 51-year-old driver, who is from the Trier-Saarburg district, has been arrested and the large hatchback vehicle seized, police added.
Police have not established the motive behind the attack, which comes on the same day Germany went into a second lockdown.
A force spokesman said on Twitter that "several" people were killed in the incident, with local media reporting four dead, including a child.
Armed police, several ambulances and the fire service are currently at the scene, along with the mayor and two helicopters circling overhead, reported Trierischer Volksfreund.
"We have a driver who ran amok in the city. We have two dead that we are certain of and up to 15 injured, some of them with the most severe injuries," Mr Leibe told a news conference this afternoon.

Awfully sparse on the details identifying who would do such a thing.
Also no mention if these people in the crowd were Christmas shopping.

I regularly visit SW Germany for work although my last trip was November of last year.
Year, over year, the number of “Asians” (i.e. Arab/muslim/Middle eastern types) got bigger. Last November, there were hoardes of them milling about in the Saarbrucken bahnhofstrasse with all the Christmas stuff. They come up and ask for stuff, I pushed one of them down and told him GET THE EFF OUT OF MY FACE. We skeedaddled after that as others started to gather to come at us.
It was 2am and he was probably drunk.
This would come as no surprise to me that it’s a ROPer driving into Germans.
