ere's What You Need to Know: A carrier-launched fifth-generation stealth fighter would massively expand China’s ability to project power internationally.
China is sending a fighter jet and helicopter armed aircraft carrier to the South China Sea as part of an overt demonstration to show that its first indigenously-built aircraft carrier, the Shandong, is ready for war.
A report in The Global Times references a CCTV video showing Chinese J-15 fighters and Z-9S helicopters taking off from the deck of the Shandong, conducting combat training operations and live-fire attack drills.
While there are many unknowns with China’s first home-built carrier, it does appear to massively increase the country’s power-projection possibilities, bringing new Pacific-area and international threat possibilities to the U.S. Navy.
One of these threat possibilities includes the possibility that China is now building a new, carrier-launched variant of its fifth-generation J-31 stealth fighter to rival the U.S. Marine Corps F-35B and Navy F-35C.
An expeditionary fifth-generation stealth fighter able to operate from Chinese amphibious ships and aircraft carriers does bring new attack possibilities for maritime commanders seeking to project power. The possibility certainly does align with China’s well-known work to build its own indigenous fleet of aircraft carriers.

Wanting something and having it are two different things....
To date, they cannot design a Gen 4 carrier aircraft with range or payload. It is a big jump to get there and adding stealth into the equation further complicates things.
They will get there eventually, but by any objective measure without Gateway Pundit levels of hyperbole by the defense industry in the US, China’s Air Force would be DESTROYED by Western powers. They are WAY BEHIND in the air (and on the ocean) when it comes to force projection.
China can already take out the U.S. in the Pacific.

Worse than that, especially under a Biden administration, our military will be woefully unprepared and have a lack of training and proper military equipment to fight China.
Biden is going to give up Taiwan without a shot because he has no ability to counter China and will get no support from the progressive liberals for a war for a country nobody knows anything about.
Only when they can put a carrier battle group 7,000 miles from home and keep them operating independently for 200 days can they “project power internationally”.
Not worried.
BFD
No carrier group
Target rich...
Today they just want the entire South China Sea and Taiwan.
They’re gonna need a bigger boat.....................
Americans should buy more cheap Christmas crap to help them reach their goal.
</sarcasm>
Until they can get a catapult launch system for their carriers, they are mostly a paper tiger in power projection beyond their region. Their conventional jets have to launch with minimal munitions and fuel as it is, let alone a stealth jet.
I think we could arrange to send them a squadron or two of ours.
It would be a teachable moment for them.
rofl...
And TOMORROW they want...
They make claims no one will respect because there are other nations lining that area and they have claims, plus international waters limits are 12 miles off the coast, so
tough shiite for them
you mean their russian jets, or their copies of their russian jets...?
however their carrier killer missile just successfully hit a moving ship
China’s strategy against US force projection is area denial, specifically, a massive force of antiship missiles. In that manner, China intends to counter US naval air strength.
Yes, they intend on using anti-ship missiles. However, we will gain air superiority and with our capability to project air power with tankers from bases within the region there is no reason for our ships to get within range. The Navy is obsessed with carriers and they are massive and mighty machines of war, but frankly to me, their risks against near peer foes because of the ability of missiles makes them a bad bet. A multi-billion dollar assets that can be taken out by a $100,000 missile should never be in range of those missiles.
By using secure land bases and keeping our carriers out of the range of such missiles we can use our aerial refueling and minimize the risks. Yes, you will have fewer sorties, but over time I believe our Air Force and Navy have the advantage. The crux of it is that early in any conflict with China we would NOT want our ships within range of the mainland. We can inflict a lot of damage at distance if we are patient with few losses.
“however their carrier killer missile just successfully hit a moving ship”
Citation?
That would be a first.
It doesn’t matter what China’s military can or can’t do, if a Biden Administration will let them do as they please without response.
Don’t have but I believe it was posted recently on FR -easy to overlook that stuff with all the election crap
As far as I know China has never hit a moving target at sea with their “carrier killer”.
In fact, they have never tried.
It’s another of their cartoon weapon systems.
The Chinese have a reputation for malevolent patience. They want the South China Sea. If Biden wins, they’re golden. If not there is always next election.
When they get the South China Sea, they start strangling Taiwan’s commerce. Harass it. Arrange ‘accidents.’
Same for other nations surrounding the SCS.
Of course the PRC’s biggest mistake was to crush Hong Kong - after all, if that is how they keep a bargain, why would the Taiwanese believe any promises about autonomy?
