Once drove from Grafenwöhr to Munich in early morning pea soup fog to catch a flight. Heavy traffic — cars, trucks, buses — motoring together at ~115-130 kph (70-80 mph)...in the right lane! Fog broke outside of Munich, but one of the worst white knuckle experiences ever. And I formerly had been a Navy carrier aviator!

I love to watch those youtube videos of carrier flight deck operations. If I had known 50 years ago what I know now this old Army guy would have gone Navy!

I once saw part of an interview of a policeman who patrolled the Autobahn. At one point he said that some of the accidents he responded to were so bad that the occupants couldn't even be recognized as human. I kid you not!

Just as you were freaked out by your experience I'm freaked out by that comment despite having had a 25 year career in a big city ER.

Yeah, I hear ya. Mine was an extremely foggy December evening drive across the Central Valley from Sacramento to Livermore. Couldn't see the road at all for about 30 miles. Just the taillights in front of me. All I could do was follow them and stay in range so I didn't lose sight of them. Giving me flashbacks just writing about it. All at about 80mph.

I drove a Mercedes up to 200 km/h for about 15 seconds, just to be able to experience that once. A European colleague would routinely drive between 230-250 km/h there. Not comfortable for me. On the other hand I swan dived a 150 ft bungee jump in my 20’s...
