Life expectancy in Sweden will probably fall in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the country's statistics agency said Wednesday.
The agency's predicted fall would mark the biggest year-on-year drop since 1944, Örjan Hemström, demographer at Statistics Sweden, said.
The life expectancy for women is set to fall from 84.7 to 84.4 years.
For men, it is expected to drop from 81.3 to 80.8 years, which roughly offsets the large increase in life expectancy recorded in 2019.
Sweden has taken a more relaxed approach to the pandemic by refusing to impose a national lockdown and instead adopting voluntary social distancing.
But the country is now in the midst of a second wave with soaring COVID-19 cases, and has admitted that it was wrong to expect its no-lockdown policy would prevent another surge.
On Tuesday, the country's top epidemiologist, Anders Tegnell, said: "We see no signs of immunity in the population that are slowing down the infection right now," per Bloomberg.

I just looked it up, there is a slight “second wave” going on, but the daily death rate is around 15. For the entire country.

There’s a problem with that logic.
Sweden based their strategy on herd immunity, and if as you
say it morphs this rapidly, that would be a very poor
strategy indeed.
I don’t know everything to know about testing, but if it has
morphed once, twice, or more, the testing would not be
effective. I suspect it hasn’t morphed that much.
We already suspect some false positives in testing, and
don’t necessarily think they’re very accurate, so there is
that as well.
Herd immunity is a joke. As long as there is a carrier and people that haven’t been infected you’re going to have new cases.
You might have fewer cases as the number of non-infected people shrinks, but that is not immunity.
Compared to the rest of western Europe they’ve just had a blip of deaths since the cold weather began.
I’d say herd immunity is working very well for them.
Or that a large proportion of the most susceptible have already perished and there are many fewer of the extremely vulnerable around anymore. Thats not herd immunity, but it keeps the current death rate down.

Yes - an infected person can always infect someone without immunity.
the point is that if someone new gets it and is surrounded by people that have had it then the virus doesn’t transmit and the infection rate drops. Eventually the rate drops far enough that the virus can’t spread altogether and it dies out.
It’s a matter of statistics as to what percentage of population that occurs with - commonly it’s been over 50% and vaccinations will help with that percentage.
Immunity is the ability to avoid infection. Immunity=immunity.
The more immune people you’ve got the lower the risk that an infected person will pass it on, and over time the fewer infected people you need to worry about.

Countries that locked down are also seeing a reemergence of the virus. Even though there was no mandatory lock down I expect quite a few Swedes voluntarily isolated themselves. So there may have been a sort of lock down. Keep in mind too that Sweden is probably being pressured to implement a lock down by other countries. With threats about trade taking center stage.
As to the fatality rate. Like every other COVID fatality rate I doubt a distinction is made between with COVID and from COVID. Same goes for herd immunity. I would not be surprised if the rate of herd immunity is higher than what is given.
