Subway shoving, flamethrowers, shootings in NYC blamed on 'perfect storm' of police reform, pandemic

From subway attacks to shootings, violent crime is surging in New York City -- a startling reversal after years of record declines.

On Thursday, a 40-year-old woman was shoved onto the subway tracks in Manhattan's Union Square station just before a train pulled in. She fell between the rails and a row bed, police said, escaping with minor injuries. A suspect was immediately arrested.

Hours earlier on Wednesday night, a man was shoved onto the tracks of the 42nd Street-Bryant Park station by a panhandler after refusing to give him money, authorities said. The victim was able to get back on the platform and wasn't seriously hurt. A suspect was arrested.

Alex Weisman, a member of the original cast of Broadway's "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child," was attacked at an Upper West Side station Tuesday afternoon. He suffered fractures around his eye that required surgery.

IMHO, this is the low point for NYC. Maybe it will encourage people not to elect another idiot for mayor or governor. NYC will recover. Just a matter of time.

The 70s called, they want their city back.

Sure they want their city back. I visited twice in the last 5 years before the plague, and had a great time. I want to visit again, but not before it stabilizes and the vaccine takes effect.

There was a report that the NYC economy may not recover till 2023. If this bs continues, perhaps not even then.

I’ll believe it’s getting rough when FAUX news goes dark.

Oh, and burn down the New York Times, if you’re serious.

When you really think about it what does NYC consist of? It is Money movers and entertainers that is what that city is made of. The rest of the businesses there support the money movers and the entertainers. They no longer produce anything. There are no factories or refineries. You have the ports and that’s it. Now we are in shutdown people are banking from home, working from home, and getting their entertainment at home. NYC like most big cities relies on disposable tangible income to thrive.

That is all gone right now. Sure they are still eating outside and it’s still filled to the gills with people who have to eat, but they are also leaving in droves. That city is gonna change big time over the next ten years. Whether it for the good or not is still to be seen, but if what is going on now is any indicator it won’t be good. That city had some very good hard line mayors in the past that really cleaned it up.

Now it seems like this mayor is destroying everything the mayors of the past tried so hard to fix. Hey guess people will overlook a lot if you paint BLM on a street. This guy hates NYC and is the Mayor you can’t make this stuff up. The sooner they get rid of this guy the better chance that city has of not going straight down the tubes.

IMHO, this is the low point for NYC.

NY’s previous dark period started with John Lindsay, and then went through near bankruptcy with Beame, then Koch and Dinkens.

I think we’ve only entered a new “Beame” phase. De Blasio still has another year of destruction left to go. Future budgets will be a disaster. Regardless of who comes next, De Blasio has emboldened the socialists who will not retreat quietly. Maybe NYC will get bailed out by Democrats, but either way, crime can yet increase a lot, and quality-of-life still has a long way to fall. I would avoid NYC for the next 5 years at least.

I don't know if New York City will recover. People look at the decline of the 60s, 70s, 80s, and today as separate events but they're all linked.

Cities, but especially New York City, haven't kept up with changes and are only falling behind more and more. They're a design from prior to the piston engine and the automobile.

These cities went from a congregation in a viable area, usually a port, to a center of decay that relied on immigrants from worse conditions to cycle through them to keep them afloat.

The mass transit system was state of the art when it was built but is now a century out of date; unable to handle the current number of riders, insufficient escalators and elevators, narrow platforms, entering and exiting cars from the same side instead of using both, the inability to charge fares by distance instead of a flat rate, etc.

The sidewalks are too narrow for the amount of pedestrians, and few have room for safety pilings to protect pedestrians from vehicles, and little space to handle deliveries through pedestrian crowds. Lack of security distance from explosive laden vehicles is a whole other matter that takes it out of contention for many potential occupants.

The streets are too narrow for standard vehicles such as a tractor trailer. There's also not enough room for bicycles that continue to grow in usage due to the limits of other transportation options.

The buildings cannot house modern industry applications and are relegated to retail, offices, and apartments and very small ones at that. The only option for centuries has been to continue building skyward but such costs are prohibitive and the setup is limiting.

These cities are overly dependent on commuters as well as goods shipped in from farther and farther away but are using infrastructure from more than a century ago.

These cities are prohibitively expensive and restrictive on raising children. That alone poses a limit a city will never get past. Incentivizing senior citizens' departures doesn't bode well either.

Without election reform, NYC will never recover. And the fact that its not the Gibs-me-dats moving out of NYC is a very bad portend of the future.

Detroit was the wealthiest city in America, before Democrats. How’s it doing now?

A much smaller population and a 100% increase in shootings.

To help combat gun violence, the NYPD eliminated its Homeless Outreach and Shelter

The city does not have alleys for deliveries and garbage It all has to be done from the streets in front.

Good points.

Trump saw this all coming.

That’s why he moved to Florida.

Does Fox ever put a video on that corresponds to the article they referred to? I can almost never find them.

Right on all accounts.

It was a beautiful place when I grew up there in the forties and fifties.

I am so grateful for the time I had there when it was “A Wonderful Town.”
