Not really. The MT30 is essentially a an aero jet engine adapted to generate electric propulsion to drive a ship. It’s not a diesel engine, it’s a high performance gas turbine powerplant.
Most uk and us warships use gas turbines.
protip, it's not gas...
Well, I have yet to hear of an aerojet engine that runs on diesal, and the MT30 is essentially a modified Trent 800 engine. The Carriers do have diesal generators as auxiliaries but the performance comes from the MT30s.
Oil Refining and Products
Jet Fuel (Kerosene)
Jet fuel is the third most important transportation fuel. It is a middle-distillate product that is used for jets (commercial and military) and is used around the world in cooking and heating (kerosene). When used as a jet fuel, some of the critical qualities are freeze point, flash point, and smoke point. Commercial jet fuel has a boiling point range of approximately 190–275°C and that of military jet fuel is 55–285°C. Kerosene, with less critical specifications, is used for lighting, heating, solvents, and blending into diesel fuel. n-Paraffins in the range C12–C14 may be extracted from kerosene for use in the production of detergents.
P-5 is also known as high-flash-point kerosene. It is safer to handle than even Jet A and is required for aircraft aboard aircraft carriers as well as for presidential fleet aircraft. Its composition includes approximately 53 percent C9 to C16 liquid paraffins (hydrocarbons) with the rest made up of cycloparaffins, aromatics and olefins.
JP-8 is a 100 percent kerosene blend and is an acceptable substitute for diesel fuel. It is the fuel most widely used for military aircraft, and its use is expected to continue until 2025. Unlike JP-4, which feels like a solvent to the touch, JP-8 feels somewhat thick and oily.
So, it runs on kerosene then? Thought so.
Jet fuel is highly refined kerosene #1 fuel oil. Diesel #2 fuel oil.
JP-8 is a 100 percent kerosene blend and is an acceptable substitute for diesel fuel.
Same, same.
“Greatest power” my arse. This statement from a frightened little boy who has participated in causing the flu to destroy his once-great country and crush its formerly proud and courageous people.
Gas turbines use Jet a. Which is #1 fuel oil only higher refining.
A nuke aircraft carrier travels 30 years continuous use without a refill.
The benefits of a nuclear carrier are dubious given the much greater expense involved. You don’t save much on logistics because you still need fleet replenishment ships to replenish aircraft fuel and refuel the escorts.
In any case, don’t see what the point of willy waving is about. We all know that nothing is as powerful as a fully fledged American $15 billion nuclear supercarrier but the $3 billion QEC carriers are still a more formidable warship than that which any other navy outside the US can boast.
They are the only other carrier outside the US that wields a 5th generation combat aircraft and should be a formidable asset to the NATO alliance, regardless how it is propelled.
Considering what the other “naval powers” of Europe look like currently, that’s not saying much.
Of course if it’s British it has to be better, right?
Better watch out..... Argentina might want to annex the Malvinas again and the new Iron Lady is named Boris.
Better in what sense? In terms of raw power, an American nuke power carrier is obviously going to be better, but this isnt about competing with the USN, it is about being an asset fit for UK needs based on the means available to the UK. It’s a lot cheaper to run whilst still fielding a fifth generation combat jet. You could get about three of these for the cost of a Gerald Ford Class and run it for about a 4th of the cost dues to the size of the crew required with the level of automation they have and the much lower level of manpower needed to operate a gas turbine than a nuclear power plant.
Only the USN has a more powerful warship than this, and it doesn’t need to be bigger and better than what the USN has because we are allies. As for Argentina, they arent a threat to anybody, least of all Britain. They dont even have combat aircraft any more.
Neither the Russians, Chinese, Indians nor France can match it because they all operate 4th generation aircraft on their carriers.
“No it isn’t”. (John Cleese in the ‘argument sketch’)
So much Blather.
Now I’ll slowly drive away in my bigass Ram pickup with 347 cu in (5.7 L ) V8. Left hand in the air. Middle finger straight up.
