BALTIMORE (WBFF) - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Baltimore field office stopped 157 stolen cars from being shipped overseas during the past fiscal year (Oct. 1, 2019 through Sept. 30, 2020). The Baltimore Field Office ranks second in the number of vehicles intercepted during that time.
Only the New York field office recovered more.
The total value of the vehicles was $4,876,000.
37 of the vehicles were stolen from Maryland. 16 others were stolen from Virginia. Nationally, the Office of Field Operations recovered 1,082 stolen vehicles, of which 833 were destined overseas.
Most of the vehicles were being shipped to countries in Africa, including Benin, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo. The most expensive recovered stolen vehicle was a 2019 Land Rover Range Rover, valued at $114,175; it was destined for Guinea.

I know a guy who had the first H2 Hummer in New England.
After having it for about six months he drove it up to Montreal to go to a relatives wedding. He parked it in the lot at the Marriott in downtown Montreal. There was even a lot attendant. They parked it right out front next to a high end Mercedes. He went out for the evening, got back to the hotel about 1am. The Hummer was gone. By the time they activated the Onstar there was no signal.
He ended up having to rent a car to drive back home to NH. He got the insurance and ordered another H2 Hummer. A few months goes by and he gets a call from Interpol first thing one morning. He thought someone was playing a joke on him. No, they said this is not a joke. We have located your former H2 Hummer in Cape Town, South Africa. They matched the VIN # on the engine block. It had been repainted, etc.
He ended up going down to the FBI building in Boston the next week and giving a deposition.
Actually now that i think about it, they are probably not being secretly moved through the port - they are probably listed under some company as legit.

Not necessarily. The vehicles get put into a container before they get to the port. The BOL can say automobile parts or machine parts, etc. Baltimore is one of the busiest ports in North America. Thousands of containers go through monthly.
Customs tends to be more concerned about things coming INTO he US than going OUT.

Lots of lower end vehicles from the US end up all over the globe. For example, Toyota Tacomas and Nissan pickups get sold in Asia, Africa and Central America after they can no longer pass inspection here in the US.
I had a 1988 Toyota Tacoma I sold in 1999. I had two different guys call and ask if it would pass inspection. I told them yes. One guy said he bought these trucks IF they did not pass inspection and shipped them to Central America.
The next guy said he sent them to Asia. He was only interested in either Toyotas, Nissan or old Datsuns because they will run forever.
A couple years later the US invaded Afghanistan. All of those Taliban dudes were riding around in old beat to crap Toyota, Nissan and Datsun pickups. So, I coined the phrase: “Toyota Tacoma Official Vehicle of the Taliban.”
