The U.K. will stop selling new diesel and petrol (gasoline) cars and vans from 2030 under plans announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
The move is part of a wider 10-point plan for a so-called “green industrial revolution” aimed at generating as much as 250,000 jobs and combatting climate change.
Announced late Tuesday night will focus on a range of areas including carbon capture and storage, low-carbon hydrogen generation, offshore wind and nuclear energy.
Given that internal combustion engine vehicles still represent the majority of vehicles driven on U.K. roads, there are clear hurdles to overcome if the 2030 target is to be met.

Boris Johnson belongs in the nuthouse, not 10 Downing.
And when they can’t get food to the table...
More for us! Woo hoo!
By 2040 it will look like Cuba with all the vintage cars on the road.
Where I live, I think they should put stickers on all teslas that say “powered by coal”. Anyone who is talking about going full electric and is not pushing nuclear power is a fool.
More significant than that will be when they ban the sale of gas and diesel and/or put the price out of the range of the people.
Are they going to increase their electrical generating and transmission capacity by 10x as well?
Electricity is just magic that comes from the wall, no worries.
I brought this up on a left-leaning social board I monitor, and they went absolutely bananas. "Wind power is the future!" was a common refrain. Not a one of them was even entertaining how to get power to their newfangled electric vehicle. It's like they just expect it to manifest from the wall socket.
How about planting more green things...
Same date as other states and countries have come up with, like there was a plan and we were not at the meeting.
Where does all the electricity come from to charge up the electric cars.
So “Great” Britain wants to become Cuba?
Way to go Boris!
Auto parts store owners will be the real winners here.
For a while anyway.
This banning of petrol/diesel CARS is not a problem for the UK which is small and densely populated. Public transport and electric cars suit this smaller country. They don’t work in much of the USA (except the north-eastern corridor), but would work in the UK
Made that comment in a “sustainability” meeting the other day at work. The other attendees looked at me like I was an idiot. I may be, but I bet I’m also right.
north sea wind farms
More cheap gas for me then.
Boris Johnson is what the GOP will be in a decade or two should the steal go through.
Well, this does speak to why they think we should not kill animals for food. They think that instead we should just get our meat from Safeway. :)
good luck with that, idiots
