This is just poor reporting. If a patient contracts COVID-19, develops blood clots, and a blood clot results in a heart attack that kills the patient, the death certificate will list heart attack as the immediate cause of death and COVID-19 as the underlying cause of death.
The underlying cause of death is the disease or injury which initiates the chain of events leading directly to death. This happens with cancer patients all the time. Patient develops cancer, malignant tumors destroy the internal organs, multiple organ failure results in patient death. Immediate cause of death is multiple organ failure. Underlying cause of death is cancer. If we eliminated those deaths from the cancer stats, we’d have virtually 0 cancer deaths in this country. That doesn’t mean we’ve cured cancer.

and the underlying cause of dying from covid or any other bodily dysfunction is a poor or compromised immune system, endemic in the ranks of the elderly and sickly; this we see borne out by the age ranked death statistics, which should not exactly be earth shattering news, since that has been the way of the world since life began on it...so if we want to be super honest about this, we would say the vast majority died because their bodies were ready to do so...but we don’t list that as a cause of death on a certificate, do we...?
