Cancel Thanksgiving
Tha Atlantic ^ | 6:45 PM ET | James Hamblin

Posted on 11/16/2020 6:43:49 PM PST by conservative98

Celebrating Thanksgiving by entering someone’s home and spreading a lethal infectious disease is a little too darkly ironic anyway.

Take the opportunity to think about what you love most about the day. Focus on how to re-create that, and even build on it. Maybe learn to cook one of the dishes that someone else usually brings to dinner. Think of the people you actually look forward to seeing, and call them. Think of the people you don’t look forward to seeing, and don’t call them. Appreciate that you can’t get cornered by some annoying second cousin; you save money on travel; you don’t have to pretend to care about football.

Maybe most important, this year is an opportunity to bond over the moral certainty of the moment. At its core, Thanksgiving is a nebulous day of atoning for the sins of colonialism by eating food and saying thank you. Now families and friends and communities can work together to achieve something meaningful and good: ending the pandemic. All you’re asked to do is eat food at home.

Whatever you do, take heart that this radically different pandemic lifestyle doesn’t have to last too much longer. By next Thanksgiving, if the news of an effective vaccine proves as fortuitous as it sounds, we can go back to whatever traditions draw people to this day. This is a onetime deal. Next year will be an opportunity to be thankful for the elements of the holiday that we tend to take for granted. It will be like a Super Thanksgiving. Or maybe this new way of doing it will work so well, you’ll never want to go back.

I think I will torture you greatly by celebrating Thanksgiving (colonialism) by eating great amounts of turkey.

May you like pain and misery and celebrate by feeling bad.

My wife went to the store the day our idiot governor made his speech and “shutdowns”. She got all of our Thanksgiving stuff.

Her favorite check-out gal was saying it was crazy on the run on TP and it was all gone. My wife told her “Oh - my husband had us stocked up the first week of February!” (Of course after giving it away to relatives and neighbors I had to restock during the late summer!).

“BUT - I am getting the turkey today. Just in case they ban the sale of turkeys!”

“Smart girl!” replied the check-out gal.

“At its core, Thanksgiving is a nebulous day of atoning for the sins of colonialism by eating food and saying thank you.”

Thanksgiving is a CELEBRATION OF CAPITALISM!

They were starving under their original compact of communal living and “sharing”. It was only after they revised (on their own, against the edicts of their European sponsors) the rules that allowed for families to profit from their own efforts that a successful harvest happened and provided for ALL!

“If any of our children's roommates or boyfriends are at loose ends, they'd be welcome as well.”

My most memorable Thanksgivings were as a college student and being taken in by a family of a friend.

The most memorable was showing up at a Colorado ranch house, the family of a girl that I was friends with. She wasn't going to make it, but she said that I was welcome to join her family and then go pheasant hunting on their farm and neighbor's farms.

I showed up and knocked on the door and said “Thank you so much for allowing me to join you for the weekend.”

Their daughter (my friend) had never called them about me visiting! (IIRC it was a radio-phone or something that didn't always work.) But there I am - standing in their door! I apologized, and asked if it would be okay to just sleep in my truck (with a small camper shell and bed in the back) in their yard.

“Oh - for heavens sake! Of course not. We just got done eating but there is plenty of food for you. And you can sleep in Jane's room as of course she isn't around. So how do you know Jane? It's so nice to meet one of her friends from college! Are you in her classes....”

The following day I went out hunting with their 14(?) year old son to show me which properties were okay to hunt. Just walked the ditches. I got a couple.

The next year I went back. Jane (of course I can't remember her name now - we were acquaintances more than friends) was there - so they put me out in their Jet-Stream trailer. Heat, running water, the works!”

Good memories! One year, my husband invited a college classmate and his mother, who was visiting him from Turkey. The lady didn’t speak any English, but we had two small children at the time, and she was happy to hold them and play with toys. She missed her grandchildren.

They are using this as a way to murder our traditions, Christmas is coming. I watched a show on national geo about the life of Jesus and they suggested that he could have been just a radical who planned on bucking the system and his disciples as men who promoted a lie in resurrection to continue this. We are being fed and many will eat

this is also a very convenient excuse to use if you don’t want to blend with family this year.
My nephew, who is raging about Thanksgiving/covid will have a small dinner with his girlfriend and her kids- but she does not care to see his mom, so they say “ Oh, Covid. YOU be safe, we’ll stay here.”

I’ve invited some non-family personnel, too, just because I can.

I am not an agitator: ten children knocked all desire for conflict right out of me. I don’t fuss about wearing a mask in stores that call for it or at church when I’m near others. I stand on my designated spot in line at the post office.

However, I will have as many people at my house for Thanksgiving or Christmas as are willing to come, and I hope Safetyism Dictators are home alone with cold toast ... though they’d be welcome here if they brought wine and promised to follow the Conversation Guidelines - food, beverages, pets, school, games, gratitude, cars, and weird things that happened in your childhood.

Great point. He’s been indoctrinated, not educated, if he thinks Thanksgiving has anything whatsoever to do with atoning for colonialism. It is a day to give thanks and praise to, in Lincoln’s words, “...our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.”

Thanksgiving is American. Global reset is antithetical to it. That is why. Christmas will be attacked with equal fervor. Stand.
