Surging virus cases get a shrug in many Midwestern towns

Danny Rice has a good sense of how dangerous the coronavirus can be.

What puzzles him are the people who have curtailed so much of their lives to avoid being infected by the virus.

“I’m not going out and looking to catch it,” he said, sitting at a cluttered desk in his auto repair shop in the tiny eastern Nebraska community of Elmwood. “I don’t want to catch it. But if I get it, I get it. That’s just how I feel.”

Plenty of people agree with Rice, and health experts acknowledge those views are powering soaring COVID-19 infection rates, especially in parts of the rural Midwest where the disease is spreading unabated and threatening to overwhelm hospitals.

It’s not that people in Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa and elsewhere don’t realize their states are leading the nation in new cases per capita. It’s that many of them aren’t especially concerned.

Wayne County, home to 6,400 people in southern Iowa, has the state’s second-highest case rate, yet its public health administrator, Shelley Bickel, says mask-wearing is rare. She finds it particularly appalling when she sees older people, who are at high risk, shopping at a grocery store without one.

Masking is not going to stop the virus.

Concern Troll AP is concerned that mid-westerners aren’t concerned.

Nearly the entire extended family of a close friend of mine recently got COVID. They live in a rural county.

All of them were cured of it with HCQ within two days. My friend decided he would get by without it, but after five days of 100 degree fever, bit the bullet and got the HCQ, but he was fine two days later, as well.

COVID is not a big deal. It is just this year’s flu.

Yeah, it's so dangerous that 99% of people who get it don't have any symptoms and, even those who do, only experience mild symptoms.

Yes, yes. Elderly people are more susceptible but, then, what AREN'T they more susceptible to?

that was NEVER the point, don’t you see??

This will be run 24/7...

First get biden elected, then prepare for the lockdown and shut down.

And then prepare for the economic collapse and redistribution of wealth among the world.

That’s the “great reset” that billionaires, chinese and dems met about...with soros and gates there too.

what a shame

People discuss masks the wrong way. The science shows the mask is not going to prevent you from getting the virus. Eventually, everyone will get it. This is true.

The mask does lower the viral load you will get significantly so your infections are more likely to be mild and asymptomatic.

If everyone wore their masks and just carried on with life, it’s a good chance it would lead to herd immunity with everyone getting infected with a mild case like if you were exposed to a live vaccine almost.

This doesn’t work for the elderly and immunocompromised. They need N95 or lockdown at home.

Normal life for healthy people with masks and lockdowns for the sick and elderly.

They are coming out with a T Cell immunity blood test soon to screen for those likely to have asymptompatic or mild infections. These people probably don’t need masks.

Its called “ getting on with life” and its what the human race has done at some point in every pandemic, some far more deadly than this

Young healthy people being exposed and developing antibodies and immunity are nature’s way of mass vaccination. The at risk population can decide how to protect themselves, it’s called personal choice and responsibility.

That being said I do wear one when in stores, or walking into small businesses.

I do not think people with medical conditions, or those who already had COVID should have to wear them.

those views are powering soaring COVID-19 infection rates,...

Horsecrap.

According to the same people, rates in “compliant” places like NY and CA are “skyrocketing!!!”

We have been doing this mask/limited shutdown crap for months now...if it worked, we would be rid of it...but we are not.

This is a lie. And we are falling for it...[well maybe not us here but you know what I mean]

Hey AP - come to the midwest nursing home where my mother-in-law is staying. 48 out of 75 people have tested positive despite very strict sanitizing and testing along with everyone required to wear both masks and face shields for the last few months. One man in his 80s died, but he was in very bad shape anyway. Everyone else is recovering. My 84-year-old mother-in-law had fatigue and a dry cough for a few days... and now she’s fine and back in her room.

“She finds it particularly appalling when she sees older people, who are at high risk, shopping at a grocery store without one.”

The “experts’ told us the masks were to keep infected people from spreading the virus... not to protect well people. Even the idiots in charge can’t keep it straight after all of these months. But as you said the masks do not stop the virus, and the face coverings people are wearing do basically nothing.

Now there is no “hurt Trump” motive so the virus is passe.

Except how can narcissistic tyrants like Whitmer,Newsom and Cuomo give up the grip on total power? They won’t.

Soon people demand Socialist government checks in the mail without delay. No open restaurants or shopping areas. Jobs dry up again.

Or riots which will end in the “benevolent” new Socialist government under Kamala “solving” the problem.

Is the WuFlu real - Yes. Can it be dangerous - yes, if you have compounding existing conditions, just like the flu can kill you.

Are the WuFlu infection rates real - No. The tests do not directly test for the virus, it was adapted from a test looking for certain enzymes, and this test is looking for an enzyme marker. What is the rate of false positive and false negative testing result - I have never seen this published but I assume it is significant.

How many positive test results are from people with no symptoms and are not infectious because the amount of the enzyme detected was infinitesimal - I bet a significant percentage.

Then why the WuFlu panic? It is a global strategy to create fear, compliance to the State, train people to accept lockdowns.

I will not and have not been complying.

[including President Donald Trump, who has mocked mask wearing and downplayed the seriousness of a pandemic that has killed more than 240,000 people.]

No, he hasn’t, and it hasn’t killed 240,000 people either. Also, without symptoms, a positive test alone should not be counted as a case.

Me, too. If staff I interact are wearing theirs or it’s required indoors, I’ll wear only as long as I must.
