How Nancy Pelosi Could Lose the Speakership Even if Democrats Hold the House
PJ Media ^ | 11/11/2020 | Tyler O'Neil

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) may be in serious trouble come January. While prognosticators predicted that Democrats would take the majority in the U.S. Senate and pick up more seats in the U.S. House of Representatives this year, Republicans actually held on to many contested seats and they picked up seats in the House. In fact, some have suggested that Pelosi may lose control of the House even if Democrats keep their majority.

On Sunday, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) insisted that Republicans are “close enough now that we can control the floor with a few Democrats joining us.”

That prospect is not as far-fetched as some think. Some Democrats broke with Pelosi in 2018, voting against her taking the helm on the House floor.

“To become speaker, you have to have 218 votes on the floor,” McCarthy explained. “When [Pelosi] went up for that vote two years ago, there were 15 Democrats who voted against her. Ten of those Democrats will be coming back to Congress. If those ten vote against her again, she will not be speaker of the House because she won’t have 218 because of the gains of the Republicans.”

McCarthy insisted that Americans “rejected socialism” in the 2020 elections — and indeed, President Trump’s anti-socialism message seems to have resonated with Cubans, Venezuelans, Colombians, and others who either fled socialism personally or whose recent ancestors fled the horrors of socialism. Two Cuban American Republicans won election to the House in Miami-Dade.

McCarthy also noted that Republicans gained among minorities and women in the 2020 elections, and the number of Republican women elected to Congress hit a new record.

While Pelosi told 60 Minutes that socialism was “not the view of her party” in 2019, she has refused to condemn socialism

Even though Democrats are likely to hold on to the majority in the House, the possibility exists that the right Republican might be able to pick up a few Democratic defectors and become the speaker. It remains to be seen if McCarthy or any other Republican can do so.

“...a few Democratic defectors...”

Unlikely. They are terrified of their “base” and rightfully so.

But maybe some of the races in “swing” states get voided or overturned and we get a majority.

Where does the count stand now with dems vs republicans? How many races are we still waiting on?

Or a least support moderate democrats as speaker and committee chairs and banish the excrescences in the party to the sidelines. In fact they could think about using House rules on a 2/3 vote to remove a couple of them for gross misconduct. [dreaming and it would be a dangerous precedent perhaps, but desperate times call for desperate measures].

There is actually a case to be made that this country could survive fine with conservatives and moderate democrats. It's the Marxists and RINOs who are killing us.

It wasn’t all that long ago that people would have ‘sold their souls’ (Rs and the like, even here) at the THOUGHT of a McArthy Speakership.

I distinctly remember the words dumb, inarticulate, unable to hold a thought or put a full sentence together etc being thrust in his direction.

MAYBE ‘they’ think the country as a whole, has dumbed down enough to accept him????

Those 10 Dems will have to do one of the following:

1) Vote for Pelosi
2) Vote for another Democrat Speaker
3) Vote for a Republican Speaker, and then switch parties.

They have no other choice but to switch parties, if they become part of flipping the Speakership to the Republicans.

(if they don’t have enough votes to hand the office to the Republicans, then no one will care how they vote)

Oh, please. When endangered, Nanzi pulls out her bag of tricks, subsidizing her Speakership with any number of tax-paid perks to get votes.

<><> Free Congressional trips on govt planes is a biggie.

<><> She can blanket their districts with tax-paid “programs” to help them get reelected.

<><> she can sower them w/ campaign money from several sources if they play nice.

All of this happens behind closed doors-———but taxpayers should demand exposure and transparency for these schemes.

What base?
These Dems are in districts that Trump won. They have more to lose by going far left with the “defund the police” nonsense.
The Dem congressmen in PA who switched to the GOP and backed Trump easily won reelection no?

If we get rid of the Marxists, then the RINOs are just Democrats that usually vote with us. Getting rid of them, rather than seeing them for what they are and adjusting accordingly, could result in their replacement by real Ds. That’s a complicated calculation that Mitch/McCarthy will undoubtedly be bashed for no matter what. See it on here all the time.

I can support the Rs backing a moderate D over an extremist, but I can see them backing an extremist D to showcase the D agenda, too. Dangerous game.

There is a theory running rampant that this is all going to be shut down because Dems could lose the House with all the recounts and investigation.

I dont buy into that theory

It is interesting that China is not pushing that Biden is President Elect.

All that didn't stop the Dems from losing at least 10 house seats this year. With another estimated 20 more pick-able (in 2022) seats in Trump supporting districts.

Specific Dems might switch parties, but it will only be in the face of certain electoral defeat.

Trying to stay a D while supporting a minority party speaker is a completely different matter.

Two different things.

The “base” is Antifa, BLM, the MSM and the assortment of loons on the left that will go full-banshee on them, feeding the other three listed.

The base is BLM/ANTIFA in Chicago, not in districts that Trump won, which is what we are talking about.
Van Drew switched to the GOP and still won.

Those Democrats will cast "protest" votes against Pelosi only if they know that their protest vote won't change the outcome of the speakership election.

There is no way a sitting Democrat will vote against Pelosi and give the speakership to a Republican.

And I don't see them switching parties, either.

As much as I’d like to see this it’s not going to happen. Dims will absolutely persecute anyone who jumps ship.

“The base is BLM/ANTIFA in Chicago, not in districts that Trump won, which is what we are talking about.”

No, dude, YOU are talking about that. A lot of those people are not coming back. Why do you think Antifa and/or BLM won’t pay anybody that decides to cross party lines a visit? Never mind. I’m not going to get sidetracked by your recurring need to disrupt.

You don’t need to lecture me on Van Drew, I’m fully aware of his switch.

They don’t have to vote for a Republican. If the Republican’s and a handful of Democrats could agree on a centrist (yeah I know) then they could elect a Democrat that is easier to work with.

...“base” is Antifa, BLM,...

Antifa & BLM have been marching with banners that say:

“We don’t want Biden. We want revenge.”

and

“No Biden. No Presidents.”

They have flat out told the Ds they want everything for blacks and nothing at all for whites.

Ds would be smart to switch.
