Houston reaches highest murder total in more than a decade

Amid a violent year in Houston that escalated Monday with the deaths of six people, including a Houston Police Department sergeant, the number of murders in the city has reached the highest point in more than a decade.

Police have attributed at least 345 deaths this year to murder, effectively ending a four-year predominantly downward trend. With about seven weeks remaining until the year’s end, Houston’s murders — should they continue their upward trend — could tail the per capita murder rate of those killed in 2006, when HPD tracked 376 murders.

But the murder rate — calculated by the number of murders per 100,000 people — in Houston has historically fluctuated since 1980. According to a Houston Chronicle analysis of crime statistics, it would take scores more murders to outpace the city’s all-time high of 701 killings in 1981, during Houston’s economic boom. Records show 1991 was also an especially deadly year with 617 murders in a city that then had a population of about 1.7 million.

The lowest number of murders — 198 people — were reported in 2011 when a reported 2.1 million people lived in Houston.

Mayor Sylvester Turner this week said that while 2020 has been “a disturbing year,” the city is not alone in its crime wave. Other cities are experiencing “a great deal of violence.”

“A lot of things are happening on our streets,” Turner continued. “A lot of people who are on edge. I want people to pray for our city and kind of calm down. Bring the violence down.”

Each murder victim from this year, he said, has loved ones “who are in a great deal of pain.”

“It’s our goal to do everything we can to solve all of those cases, to bring some degree of closure to the families

In a rebuke to the "broken windows policing" popularized by NYC's former mayor Giuliani, the mayor of Houston decriminalized various misdemeanors in September 2020:

The following Class A and B misdemeanors are eligible for tickets instead of jail time:

RAT run city for the better part of the 40 plus years that I have lived in the area.

This comes as NO surprise at all.

And George Soros owns the Harris County DA, Kim Ogg lock, stock and barrel.

Our hometown of Louisville KY broke the homicide record for the yr in late Sept. Last I checked a couple days ago, we were sitting at over 140 for the year. Dem state gov and Dem city mayor wringing their hands over covid19 while BLM protests rage on with no end in sight. Louisville is a shell of its former self and it hurts to see it this way.

I left Houston and Harris county in 1990. It was bad then and it is only getting worse. Out in the East Texas woods since then.

Very sad about the police officer. The rest of them probably deserved it. Too bad gang bangers don’t have better aim. They could save the taxpayers a lot of dough that is spent patching them up to go out and shoot each other again.

Houston is a sanctuary city. There are lots of illegals and Mexican drug cartels types there. Combine that with animals from New Orleans who went there from Katrina and it is a mad house. Enter a Soros backed DA who never met a criminal she didn’t like and it’s every one for himself.

Uh, let me guess:
Democrat Mayor?
Democrat Chief of Police?
Democrat Fire Chief?
Democrat District Attorney?
Nearly all Democrat City Council members?

I’d like someone here at FR, esp. someone who is familiar with Houston, to make a list of that city’s mayors and DAs for the past 10-15 years.

I want it by Name, political party, sex, gender identification re gay, lesbian, bi, M&S, etc),race, religion (not really necessary - optional), etc.

Then place the number of homocides next to their names and terms (in years in office).

If you do this for DC, Philly, Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit, LA, Oakland, SF, Seattle and Portland, you should see a trend that will kick you in the nuts and other sensitive places.

As I save articles on crime in these cities and who are their elected officials, I’ve noticed several trends that should be obvious if charts like the ones I suggested above are created.

It will not be racist, sexist, genderist, etc. It will be the truth, reality, and politically incorrect.

I have nothing but respect for honest, efficient, pragmatic and competent law enforcement leaders. However, I’m seeing that many Democrat picks are more interested in issues of sex, gender orientation, race, and “social justice” than in enforcing the laws equitably, fairly, and efficiently.

I speak as the father of a former federal police officer who “team” was chosen for their combat skills/experiences, individual and unit discipline, common sense, and dedication to doing the job right (And I have no idea what the race, religion, sex, etc. of his unit was. All I know is that they were handpicked to be the best because they were the best).

I also speak as one who has been involved in law enforcement, internal security, and environmental cleanups for over 30 years for the govt and local law enforcement agencies and individuals from DC to Nam. Our leaders and members were chosen because they were the best qualified and great professionals. It was an honor to have worked with them.
