Rich Threadgill was born and raised in California and loved his home state. Until he didnt.
The Navy veteran is a gun fan, but he felt he couldnt talk about his hobby or express other conservative opinions without running the risk of making someone angry.
This summer, when his employer allowed employees to telework from out of state for lower pay, the 39-year-old human resources officer surprised himself. He sold his Rancho Cordova home and moved the family to Idaho, where hell build a house for less than he sold his California home.
He says he feels more relaxed in a rural environment where people are more conservative and, to his mind, more congenial. We love it, he said.
In California, if you express your beliefs, you can be outright attacked, he said.
Threadgill is among a wave of hundreds of thousands of Californians leaving the state in the last few years. Last year alone, nearly 200,000 more people left the state than moved in.
Most likely did it for economic reasons. The cost of living, particularly housing, is now far higher in California than almost anywhere else in the United States.
But a turbulent 2020 has added new motivations for migration. Amid coronavirus shutdowns, wildfires, street protests and a tense election-year political environment, some say Californias charm has finally worn too thin.
It is not necessarily healthy for California to lose conservatives, says Jessica Levinson, a law professor and political commentator at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles.
The state needs a variety of voices in the public policy realm, she said. We know from every study that diversity of viewpoints leads to better policy outcomes.

Then they carry their politics with them.
Not just their politics....they bring their teenage kids who have drug addiction problems, and its a whole new stage in the new location.
If any move here they will be miserable.
Californians should be blocked from leaving like California blocked Okies from the Dust Bowl from entering in the ‘30s. Use COVID-19 rules. (Grapes of Wrath in reverse)
Whatever happened to COVID-19? Seems like just yesterday
People fleeing sanctuary state California have a group called Life after California.
People should read the comments.

Soon this won’t matter, perhaps.
We are immersed in it here in Michigan. Much worse than back in April.
Leftist Californians are a disease spreading to other states killing prosperity and happiness wherever they go. Same with Chicagoans, New Englanders, New Yorkers, etc. etc.
At some point a divorce must happen when all leftists and conservatives must live in states designated to their ideologies. It would be a massive movement of people and great hardship on many due to many reasons. It could be one of those things that happens over a period of decades until nirvana is achieved.
I’m so sick of all the leftist nonsense. The time to be cordial is over.
Sure you are. Is that what your teevee and newspapers tell you? Where are the bodies? Are the morgues overwhelmed? Funeral directors overwhelmed? Hospitals? Wake up.
You may have cases, because thats the new narrative but cases do not always equal death. Theyve stopped reporting deaths because its not happening.
Yep. Im seeing more CA license plates out here in NC. This will be the last year any republican has a chance of winning in NC. We are going deep blue next election.
Not us. We left and our 23 year old daughter whose working on her master’s came with us.
That was 3 more red votes for Arkansas.
From watching the changes in Arizona, I believe they have less to do with California immigrants (many of whom are conservative refugees) and more to do with our own utterly corrupt and morally bankrupt government education system. Every year it turns out a new crop of raging 18-year-old Socialists, full of what they "know" about climate change and racial injustice and ready to vote accordingly. Their voting participation rates are still lower than average and some will naturally shed these beliefs as they grow up. But the visceral hatred for Trump and conservatives I see is not coming from 45-year-old Californians who just moved here - it's from the under 25 kids who grew up here and attended government schools.
I can testify. My daughter’s last two years of High School were a nightmare after Trump won. Everything became politicized. Students were encouraged to cut class and demonstrate and shamed for having the wrong ideas. The faculty was running around in those ridiculous pink pussy hats beating the orange man bad drums all day. There is some controversy in my house over college. She wants absolutely no part of it because she thinks it will be just like high school only with the bonus of thousands of dollars of debt.
I can’t really blame her but my husband wants her to go to college. She won’t set foot in one unless it’s a christian school or maybe Hillsdale.....
Anybody could have seen this coming. I did. I never bought into the mask wearing, social distancing and lockdowns. Covid-19 was simply used to provide cover for the Left to cheat in the election as an attempt to drive Trump out of office for good.
It was obvious when the CDC itself claimed last week that the "real" deaths from the corona virus were only 6% (13,200 deaths) of the publicly reported deaths of 220,000.
The American people were gamed into thinking this virus was far worse than it is.
It will fade quickly now that it's usefulness is over.
I agree but the key word in my statement was “leftists”.
There’s lots of good conservatives in Cali who are just as sick of the leftist crap as anyone else; maybe more so.
