A Diagnosis for American Polarization. ‘Splitting’ is a defense mechanism by which we frame ideas or people in all-or-nothing terms.

Why are evidence and reason largely absent from political discussion? Why are well-supported facts often no match for emotion? Much of it can be explained by a process called “splitting.” Though little known to the public, the term is used widely by mental-health professionals.

I first noticed splitting a few years ago, when I provided psychotherapy to a depressed college student. At first our sessions focused on her depression, but my patient, a white woman, took frequent detours into racial politics. She “loved” Malcolm X and railed against “white privilege.” Then she told me that she “identified” as black.

She said she felt “black on the inside” because she “got it” and wasn’t ignorant or hateful. Everything she said about black people was positive, even idealizing. They were always blameless, strong victims. By contrast, everything she said about white people was aggressively critical and shaming. They were ignorant oppressors, fragile, selfish and guilty. One had no power; the other had all of it, and so forth. This led me to believe that she felt black because whiteness for her was intolerably negative, whereas blackness was appealing.

I was unsure how to respond. If I asked her if she felt anything positive about her white identity, the question could have provoked her. Besides, I couldn’t think of anything positive about white people that didn’t sound racist, even to my own ears. Nor could I think of a single shortcoming in another ethnic group that didn’t sound racist. Even exploring the topic in my own thoughts felt somehow wrong.

As her therapist, I wanted to help, but it wasn’t clear how to do so. Would it have been racist to ignore her comments or racist to explore them? Should she be free to see herself as black if she wanted?

The self-hatred that has been cultivated in many whites in this country is a problem. The author says "I couldn’t think of anything positive about white people that didn’t sound racist". Well, whites have been major if not primary contributors in almost all domains: literature, philosophy, science, mathematics, engineering, music. And I use the "karpov" moniker here because I am a chess fan. There has been a non-white world chess champion, Viswanathan Anand, but the rest have been white men.

Subject had the nerve to speak of white privilege, yet showed where the true privilege is.

She sees how martyrdom plays. Which have the privilege? She knows the truth but won’t speak it.

Don’t you think if orientals/yellows would play chess, they’d win most of the time?

The popularity of chess has grown a lot in China in recent years, and they have some world-class players, such as Ding Liren, but the world champion is a Norwegian, Magnus Carlsen. In recent years the woman’s world champion has often been Chinese.

The polarization comes from one side accepting postmodernism and the other side rejecting it.

Postmodernism claims truth and morality don’t exist. Then they think it’s okay to lie and steal.

And commit voter fraud.

Her level of insanity and self loathing is the result of severe cognitive dissonance - meaning there is a huge gap between what you believe the world is or should be like and its actual reality.

That level of dissonance is usually the result of being easily brainwashed.

An interesting question is why no woman has become world champ...

(The Polgar sisters made me swoon- for a time, anyway, Susan looks to have swollen up)...but I think it has something to do with physiology, not bias.

The group of friends I play with, a Vietnamese man is the top player.

This is a terrific piece. Thanks.

Should be tossed at the “good” libs whenever they likewise start defending their rioters, etc.

They are BOTH nuts. That's why she left "for undisclosed reasons".

What she really needed is Sam Kinison's "Dog Psychiatrist" skit.
