Warmington: Cherry backs Bobby Orr- a fellow Trump booster
The World News ^ | November 2 2020 | Joe Warmington

Posted on 11/03/2020 6:49:45 AM PST by xp38

Bobby Orr may have lost the support of some leftist sports writers for supporting President Donald Trump, but he still has The Coach in his corner.

“You better believe it — 100%,” said Don Cherry on Monday.

In addition to supporting Trump himself, Cherry also believes in Orr’s right as a free person to back whomever he chooses.

“Bobby was always strong,” added Cherry. “The great ones are always independent.”

It’s not lost on Cherry, however, that the hall of famer is feeling the heat after taking out a full-page ad in a Florida newspaper which backs Trump’s bid for a second term in the White House. He added “they are really giving it to Bobby in the (Boston) Globe. I guess there’s lots of stuff about it on Twitter, as well.”

But Cherry said there is nothing wrong with Orr, or any person in a democracy, expressing their political preference. While some writers have said supporting Trump tarnishes their idolization of a boyhood hero, Cherry said it changes none of that for him.

“He was always great and still is. I was proud of him then, and I am proud of him now,” he said.

Grapes said people should be entitled to their own opinion and it should not challenge friendships.

“An example is I think Trump is winning this and my son, Tim, doesn’t think so,” explained Cherry. “On our Grapevine Podcast, I did bet him $200 on it and told him to bring the money to count out next week.”

Cherry said if he has to be the one paying out the $200, he’ll hold no hard feelings.

“Tim’s entitled to his opinion, and I am entitled to mine,” said Cherry. “It does not change our relationship.”

As for people writing off others for their political beliefs, Cherry knows better than anyone how that works.

Last Remembrance Day, he lost his position on Coach’s Corner on Hockey Night in Canada after uttering strong words about people not wearing poppies.

The only person in hockey who stuck up for him was the same Bobby Orr.

“He’s always been a person of character,” said Grapes. “You could count on him when you need him.”

Orr took backlash then, too, but also gained much respect for not only being a friend in good times. The legend was there for Grapes when the same politically-correct pack was piling on him.

The sports writers who have lambasted Orr are entitled to their opinion — as is this writer.

Shouting down somebody for their free speech or their electoral choice seems arrogant. Who says their position is the only acceptable one? Cancelling people based on their political choices defies what freedom is about.

Meanwhile, many Hollywood stars have flocked to the Biden camp without any fear of repercussions. It’s not lost on Cherry that there would be no backlash if Orr was voting for Biden and his running mate for vice president, Kamala Harris.

“You are in real trouble it seems if you support Trump but I don’t care,” said Cherry. “It’s interesting how Bobby Orr is for Trump and so is Jack Nicklaus. The greatest ever hockey player and the greatest golfer to ever live.”

Now, they can add “The Coach” to the list of celebrities hoping that Trump wins Tuesday’s election.

I hope Coach is doing okay after becoming a victim of Cancel Culture.

Don Cherry lost his job and career for saying “you people” while talking about present-day lack of respect for Canada’s Remembrance Day. That’s it.

If anyone believes the Neo-marxist left and their cancel-cultural revolution is not dangerous, they are a fool.

If he had to miss any season I think he would have picked this one just passed.

In interviews from days gone by he knew he was always on the edge of being fired because the CBC is run by a bunch of leftists. He was well aware of it. He was by far the biggest star on Hockey Night in Canada so that sort of protected him until last year. I guess cancel cult got a big enough level of arrogance that it felt it could fire him finally.

Ron MacLean always has a look of apprehesion on his face on Coaches Corner, as if in fear that Grapes would utter something off-color.

He might have been protected by CBC, but Sportsnet apparently thought he would hurt the bottom line.

Don Cherry is one of the most pro American Canadians on this planet. I will never forget how he supported the US back in I think 2003 when the Iraq war began and I thought he was going to hand out some chin music to his left wing partner on Hockey Night in Canada........

I was sitting in the airport in Vancouver Sunday morning when they showed the prior night incident......

They’re talking about the hockey player/coach/commentator, not the vocalist. Grapes is still alive and kicking.

It’s ironic that he supported the US over an issue that made me see what a globalist fraud George W. Bush was. He was the last GOP presidential candidate I supported until 2016.

And yet I'll bet a dollar to donuts that at the time you supported the decision to invade Iraq, just as the vast majority of FReepers here did......

As a side note, I was in the Vancouver airport waiting for other fellow skiers to arrive for a trip to Whistler and Black Comb for the week. I made the unfortunate mistake in wearing an American flag on my parka and got the stink eye from every lift operator I encountered no matter how cordial I tried to be......

The only people I encountered out there that were friendly were the vast numbers of seasonal migrant Australian ski bums............

And you'd be 100% wrong on that one, as many long-time Freepers will tell you.

Every shred of respect and support I ever had for that retarded baboon George W. Bush disappeared on Day One of the invasion of Iraq. The only legacy he had that was worth a damn was that he made his brother Jeb less popular than a child molester in the 2016 GOP primaries.
