I have seen this movie before. Crime and violent crime were on the rise. Unemployment was high. Many Americans were concerned about their future.
A presidential candidate was running with a character platform. He basically said, Vote for me because I am honest. The candidate criticized his opponent of hate and racism.
The candidate painted America a dark country. He also told Americans that they suffered from malaise, a disease of the soul. And he would be the leader that would restore the soul of America.
A gloomy candidate.
Another candidate offered optimism. He promised to make America great again. Instead of asking his fellow countrymen to trust their government, he challenged them to trust their own values, the American spirit.
He ran on a platform to create jobs, preserve individual liberty, reduce government regulations, and build a strong military. He was committed to the protection and enforcement of the civil rights of black Americans and proposed to develop enterprise zones to help with urban renewal.
He ran a campaign of upbeat optimism. A MAGA candidate. Yet, despite his optimism, he was lagging in the polls.
You are forgiven if you think the gloomy candidate is Joe Biden and the MAGA is Donald Trump. You are not entirely wrong, however. But it was the 1980 election where the gloomy Jimmy Carter, the Democratic candidate, faced the optimistic Ronald Reagan, the Republican.

Shining light on the hill.......
In 1980, 88% of voters were white, and Reagan carried 56% of the white vote.
John Anderson, an independent center-left white Republican Congressman, carried another 8% of the white vote.
Jimmy Carter carried just 36% of the white vote.
In 2020, less than 70% of voters will be white, and Trump will carry about 60% of the white vote, maybe 1%-2% over 60%.
In 2020, more than 30% of voters will be non-white, and they traditionally vote about 75% Democrat.
Unless there is a dramatic change in non-white voting patterns, Trump's victory margin will be razor thin - just like 2016.
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...”
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.

Times are a changin’ in American voting patterns...

Anecdotally, in 2020, yes.
However, there was ZERO evidence of statistical change in non-white voting in 2016 and 2018.
In fact, non-white turn out in 2018 was the highest on record for a mid-term election.
Record non-white turn out in 2020 would flip the Senate and the White House if they maintain their 75% Democrat support.
The youth vote will be interesting. The “gloomy” candidate, Biden, is obviously in favor of locking the country back down as Covid cases grow. President Trump is vocal about opening the economy back up and keeping it open.
My guess is that young voters have had it with the lockdowns and will vote accordingly. If that proves to be true, the Democrats will have made a disastrous choice when they decided to make this election about Trump’s Covid management. And they will have compounded that error by making it so easy for them to vote by mail this year.
One thing I’m certain of—they aren’t in favor of a “dark winter.” Let’s see if they cast their votes for the candidate determined to see they don’t have to experience one.
Those of us who have waited to vote until November 3, 2020, will have our votes counted properly, with no regrets.
Interesting INFO. Thanks.
And; by all media accounts; our wait times in minimal length lines should be fairly short.

“But whats worse is the content of the speech itself. Lie after lie (doom-laden stuff about COVID and Trump, Trump called the military losers, Biden wont ban fracking although he said many times that he would, Trump hasnt delivered on any of his promises though he has) and simplistic and formulaic solutions delivered in a shouting monotone for the most part. For someone who bills himself as the nice guy in the race, this speech has a harsh animus.”
