A virtual rally in support of a proposed constitutional amendment to change Illinois' income tax system to a graduated-rate tax was sidetracked by Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle delivering a lengthy pitch for States Attorney Kim Foxxs reelection.
The rally of high-profile Democrats, hosted by the proposed amendments chief supporter, Gov. J.B. Pritzker, also featured Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton alleging amendment opponents were billionaires fighting against communities of color and women and working-class families all across the state.
But pro-amendment discussion, dubbed the fair tax by supporters, gave way when Preckwinkle, the Cook County Democratic Party chair and a strong supporter of Foxx, made a lengthy pitch for her reelection during her six minutes of speaking time.
Kim is in a tough race and really needs our support, Preckwinkle said of the first-term states attorney, who has faced controversy most notably over her handling of the case of former Empire actor Jussie Smollett, who allegedly faked a hate crime attack against himself in 2019.
Foxx is being challenged by Republican former Cook County Judge Pat OBrien.
I think the campaign thats been waged against her is really a campaign against all of the criminal justice reforms weve been struggling so hard to enact for people who want to go back to the bad old days when the jail was full of poor Black and brown people who were often there on charges of nonviolent offenses and they just couldnt pay their bail, Preckwinkle said.
Foxx also appeared at the virtual rally but made little mention of her reelection bid. Instead, she said we cannot separate this talk around the fair tax and fair funding to be able to provide the services and resources to our most vulnerable communities from the work that I do in the criminal justice space.

Preckwinkle elevated her crony, Foxx, who had minimal legal experience to the office of county prosecutor. Phony Toni has consistently maintained that minorities were arrested and jailed due to systemic racism rather than their own criminal conduct.
O'Brien's challenge is similar to other Republican candidates in Cook County: he needs to secure sufficient votes to offset Democratic vote fraud on behalf of his unethical opponent.
Foxx should be in prison.
She may actually be in trouble with this election - which is incredible for a Dem in Chicago.
In fact, the proposed amendment does only one thing: It removes taxpayer protections from the IL Constitution.
If passed, then the politicians can do whatever they want, including targeting any group of taxpayers they desire. They need only target a different group each year or two to never have enough opposition to be stopped or limited. Presently, this is prohibited.
That’s just the 1st ramification.
To Illinoisans, particularly most Dems, I would ask: Do YOU trust the politicians presently running IL, especially when it comes to money? If you do, you are a damn fool.
Foxx is probably the least qualified individual to ever hold the office of Cook County State’s Attorney and that’s saying a whole lot since some of other bad apples who occupied the same position were allies of organized crime.
As an assistant prosecutor, Foxx never managed to secure a promotion from the entry level position at the Juvenile Court. This was one of the lowest rungs on the ladder.
