Can something be most unique. Unique denotes one of a kind.
It is impossible to have something be any degree of unique.
That is a very unique way of looking at the post.
Greetings and FReegards LT!
I am a language maven among other things, loving words, and I enjoy seeing the proper term used, and feeling affinity with those who try to keep the language intact. Alas, ‘tis a doomed cause.
Here, the better term is “unusual” for he compares the usual observation of previous GOTV vote getters, normally competing against many opposing door knockers, with this year’s workers who are seeing none. Most unusual indeed! So bray is simply using “unique” as a one-to-one synonym for “unusual”. This is not unusual in my unique experience.
At my beloved alma mater, Bob Jones University in Greenville SC, the 100,000 watt campus radio station, call sign WMUU, was always called “Unique FM” by on-air personality Paul Wright. “World’s Most Unusual University” was an appellation once given to the school by a newspaper reporter on a tour of the campus led by the founder. The paper was covering one of the many politically incorrect (non)scandals that the founder and his son seemed to delight in fomenting. Meant as a veiled insult, but Dr. Bob made it the school motto and emblazoned it on every van and every printed advert.
That radio station played the most mind-numbing elevator music every afternoon. Uuugh! But there was plenty of good preaching, and quality Christian radio stuff. My late brother, Steve, known here on our forum as thulldud, worked briefly as an engineer. Charles Koelsch, a hero of mine, hosted a classical music program every evening, poetically explaining what was interesting about the compositions he played for us. Now retired, he grieves the demise of the station.
By your definition, some singular one being the most unusual would truly unique. You, Lt, are unusual in noticing the inherent inconsistency of this choice of phrase. Though not unique, you are rare indeed and perusing your past posts and comments will prove perhaps a pleasurable pastime.
I appreciate the saturbrays, but why does Humblegunner not scold him for self-promotion? More and more FR people are unsympathetic to Humblegunner in this. I fail to see his problem myself, but am satisfied he is sincerely seeking to safeguard the forum and his friend JimRob...from something.
