I was just looking at a book of color photos of WW II US fighter aircraft flown by aces. Almost all of the aircraft had oil streaks, smudges, and mismatched paint. As with the USN, the USAF, and Space Force, such cosmetic flaws signify deployment and seriousness of purpose.
