McConnell expects coronavirus stimulus in 2021, while Pelosi and Trump push for a deal sooner

The top policymakers in Washington sent mixed signals Friday about how quickly Congress could pass new coronavirus stimulus after the 2020 election.

Progress toward a relief deal ground to a halt in recent weeks as Republicans and Democrats differed over how much money they need to inject into efforts to slow record new infections in the U.S. and boost a sluggish economy. Despite the impasse, negotiators have acknowledged they will need to send aid in some form eventually.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who have not agreed on much related to the virus response in recent months, differed again Friday when asked about when stimulus could pass. The Kentucky Republican told radio host Hugh Hewitt that he expects to handle relief "right at the beginning of the year," with legislation "targeted particularly at small businesses that are struggling and hospitals that are now dealing with a second wave of the coronavirus."

Pelosi said she expects Congress "certainly will have something [done] at the start of the new presidency." But the California Democrat told MSNBC that "we don't want to have to wait that long, because people have needs." The winner of the presidential election will get inaugurated on Jan. 20, and the speaker said she believes Democrat Joe Biden will take the oath of office that day.

At the same time, President Donald Trump pushed for even more rapid passage of stimulus than the top Senate Republican and Democrat did. Speaking to reporters Friday, the president claimed "we will have a tremendous stimulus package immediately after the election."

By putting this out just before the election - telling unemployed voters there’s no stimulus coming - McConnell is trying to defeat Trump next Tues.

In a similar way, two years ago just before the congressional elections, McConnell gave an interview saying he wanted to cut Social Security. The Dems put his comments in campaign ads and the GOP lost the House. That was McConnell’s (and Ryan’s) goal, I believe, to block Trump from having any legislative successes leading up to his re-election campaign.

Here’s the difference between Mitch and me: Mitch wants Trump gone. I want Mitch gone. Boy I hope he loses on Tues.

Is Mitch TRYING to crash the market and defeat Trump?

I believe the answer is yes.

Just open the economy. Let the sick and infirm isolate. Let the healthy and strong work.

there will be a deal, as soon as the election is over. That way Trump gets no benefit from it.

I don’t think McConnell is trying to sink Trump. If Trump goes down, McDonnell loses the Senate, too. No, every election cycle he burps up these stupid and defeatist statements

That’s what Herbert Hoover said as the depression came on. His purity of principle led to FDRs election and a much greater more lasting defeat for those principles

Donald Trump was the guy who said -- weeks ago -- that he was calling off all negotiations with Pelosi until after the election.

I'm not a big fan of Mitch McConnell, but you can't manage votes in a legislative body like the U.S. Senate when you're dealing with an erratic president who is all over the place on any given day.

“ Donald Trump was the guy who said — weeks ago — that he was calling off all negotiations with Pelosi until after the election.”

Don’t be like fake news and leave out the rest of the story. Trump immediately changed his stance and called for a “big” pre-election stimulus bill, including checks to unemployed Americans.

Then, TODAY, Trump said the stimulus will be RIGHT AFTER THE ELECTION.

Both times McConnell directly contradicted him, saying “no”

If you want to defend McConnell (and the rest of the McConnell-Ryan-Romney-Sasse GOPee) you have the right to your opinion. But not to “facts” that aren’t the facts.
