Why Blue Places Have Been Hit Harder Economically Than Red Ones
The New York Times via SF Gate ^ | October 30, 2020 | by Jed Kolko, New York Times

The coronavirus recession has been more severe in Democratic-leaning places than in Republican-leaning ones. Blue states like Massachusetts and California have had steeper job losses, higher unemployment and bigger drops in job postings than red states like Utah and Missouri.

It turns out that most of this partisan gap in economic suffering is because of the different mix of jobs in red and blue places.

The partisan jobs gap has been fairly consistent. Employment in blue states fell more in the first two months, and the cumulative employment decline has remained significantly worse in blue states than in red states since June.

The sectors with the biggest job losses in the pandemic tend to be located in bluer counties. Across all industries, 57% of employed people live in counties that Hillary Clinton won in 2016. Among hard-hit sectors in the pandemic, 59% of workers in lodging and food service; 63% in arts, entertainment and recreation; and 66% in information industries live in counties that Clinton won. In contrast, jobs in most sectors less harmed by the pandemic, like utilities, construction and manufacturing, are disproportionately located in counties that President Donald Trump won in 2016.

The relatively small partisan gap in economic outcomes that remains could be a result of differences in restrictions or in individual behaviors. Throughout the pandemic, there have been clear partisan differences in concern about outbreaks, mask wearing and social distancing.

Longer-term government projections point to a far different picture. Faster employment growth is expected in sectors that are concentrated in bluer areas. But the higher cost of living in blue areas might be a drag on growth if, post-pandemic, more people continue to work remotely and some move to more affordable regions. Still, the future looks far more promising than the present for blue states’ economies.

There is a work ethic in the Red Areas versus laziness and hatred in the Blue Areas.u

The scum living in Blue areas had rather riot, steal and destroy than work for a living.

So Nancy Pelosi announced that there would be no stimulus until January, causing the markets to drop. She said something similar earlier this week that caused an 1700 point drop and said that she didn’t care if the markets fell. So she is attacking the people of the US to get her way with the stimulus bill, playing with the lives of millions of people with tier retirements just to get her way. This is the traits of a narcissist.

The Slimes running defense for incompetent, dictatorial, harsh lockdown blue state regimes? You bet.
The only reason red states like South Dakota are doing great on the economy and jobs is because there were no lockdowns at all or very mild lockdowns.
Meanwhile, blue state do dictators like Cuomo and DeBlasio deliberately used harsh lockdowns to kill the economy of New York. It's that simple.

Somewhat true... All of the celebrities whose income depends on large gatherings of crowds are hit hard. No more theatre, no more concerts, no more movie theaters, no more athletic events that are live.

Because of their draconian shutdowns...some of which still have not been fully released. Where do they think money comes from?

We never missed a beat, we did what we do and we socialized and as soon as we could were back in church.

The world around us has changed and we have adapted where we have had to but all in all, our lives remain the same.

Blue states hit harder because the democrats who run them are trying to inflict as much suffering on the public as possible , to wreck the economy, so they can "GET TRUMP."

They don't give 2 💩💩's about the people in their states, and this includes those who voted for them.

Make no mistake: the Blue State Governors are depending on a bail-out for the havoc they created trying to destroy the economy hoping Trump would get the blame. If Biden wins, then the end justified the means in their eyes. If Trump wins, it will spell the end for many of these governors when they are up for re-election.

When you live on top of a tall mountain don’t bitch because it snows and Blame Trump.

If you live in an area where employment situations are different then you have made that choice and it is not the fault of anyone else.

I get tired of listening to stupidity. If you can’t swim and hate water stay out of the damn pool.

Exactly. And even though that subject is taboo in the propagandist media/ social media, the people living in those places know, and I expect it to influence the vote by a very significant factor.

Yes, it could never be that democrat governors have shut down their states economies far more than Republican governors.

Compare and contrast: California’s governor telling people to eat Thanksgiving outside, time limit 2 hours, contact lists required, etc. etc. and SD’s governor saying she doesn’t have the right or power to declare a business ‘non-essential’.

Blue states still have higher unemployment even after factoring in all of the workers leaving those states and those jobs behind...
