(CNN)The last president facing re-election troubles like Donald Trump's was Jimmy Carter in 1980. Injured by recession and impotent against a national crisis, Carter lost big.
To describe the current incumbent's predicament, substitute Trump's botched coronavirus response for Carter's inability to free American hostages seized by Iran. Then look at the numbers. Today, Trump's national polling deficit of around 10 percentage points matches Carter's popular vote deficit against Ronald Reagan -- who won a 44-state landslide while fellow Republicans seized control of the Senate.

Booked marked for a laugh next week.
What does Jeffrey Toobin have to say?
Horse dung!!
This is a false premise. Red states are NOT locked down and their economies are beginning to surge again. Blue states are locked down with a large amount of the populace terrified of the virus.
There are in fact two America’s now. The most motivated people in the blue states are those who oppose the lock-downs and no longer buy the media fear mongering.
This piece does not follow logic and starts with a false premise.
Biden is no Ronald Reagan
Heck he isn’t even Jimmy Carter, Jimmy Carter was at least functional
Trump is not facing a Jimmy Carter situation
He is facing a Ronald Reagan situation like 1984 and winning big next week
This election will not be like 1980, it will be like 1984.
“There you go again.”
That presumes you have a challenger with a fully functional brain.
This is going to be 1984
That by far is the closest parallel we have Reagan at the end of his first term with a screaming economy that came back from the doldrums of what Jimmy Carter foisted upon us
he was taking on Russia the wall was crumbling and he was extremely popular and well spoken. I should say very much like our great and wonderful President Trump he spoke directly to the people all the time
Of course the media hated Reagan Scotts and a told America that he was 17 points down and played October and then what happened?
Hang onto this one, it’s a hoot. Yessireebub, that guy Mondale is gonna kick some serious butt. Biden. I meant Biden. Anybody seen him lately?
NO!
WTF is this even posted here. Does Matt Drudge need an annex for his slime or something?
This is a stretch of ridiculous magnitude...
Bfl
1980, most of the country was pissed at Carter. This year, it’s just the deranged element of the DEM party (which is a good portion of it, though) that’s seriously anti-Trump. A vast majority of the country was happy with Trump until COVID-19, or might I say, the reaction of the politicians in the country to COVID-19.
Does Podesta still tell him what to say/write?
Why don’t you instead report on some real news? Like the riot and looting going on in Philly?
“Why Trump could face a Jimmy Carter scenario”
Cuz 56% of voters felt their lives improved after 4 years of Jimmy Carter, and Joe Biden inspires the voter enthusiasm that Reagan did? No, and no.
Yep. It’s over. Biden will win. Trump will be defeated in a huge electoral landslide, 545-0. And then we can open the re-education camps for Republicans.
