BOSTON -- Judge Juan Torruella, the first Puerto Rican to sit on a U.S. federal appeals court, died Monday at the age of 87, the Boston-based 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said.
Toruella served nearly four decades on 1st Circuit and took part in such high-profile rulings as the tossing of Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaevs death sentence this year.

With Barrett's 7th Circuit vacancy added to this one, if the Senate confirms successors for both, Trump will have 55 Circuit judges confirmed in less than four years, matching Obama's 55 over EIGHT years.
Still no blue slip objections being observed for Circuit Court judges, so no need to choose a middle-of-the-roader.
This is why we need to set age limits on the judiciary. Still on the bench at 87. I dont care how physically fit you are, at 87 your mind is definitely slowing.
They have 2 whole months to do it. Get it done Lindsay.
It seems like Democrats have always been slow to nominate and confirm judges. I have often wondered how much of this slowness is related to trying to find candidates who are ideologically “pure” enough for them. My experience with liberals is that all of them see everyone else as less liberal and less “pure” than they are.
Whereas, conservatives are apt to accept someone who they view as conservative even if that candidate holds some views they disagree with. This is evidenced by the fact that you can almost always predict the outcome of any case tried in front of a liberal based on who appointed them, whereas, judges appointed by conservatives sometimes surprise the heck out of me.
RIP.
Not sure, but had figured the slowness to appoint was just an Obama thing, being that the man was rather lazy (opposite of workhorse Trump).
Nominate a replacement immediately. The Senate has 2 months to confirm both.
“Not sure, but had figured the slowness to appoint was just an Obama thing, being that the man was rather lazy (opposite of workhorse Trump).”
Yes, and we are lucky that the man is a slacker. Imagine if he was a driven ideolog instead of a teacher’s lounge “intellectual.” We would all be living with a 1984 monitor watching our every move. (Unlike our cell phones that totally do not spy on us.)
However, the president is one thing. He has a staff of like-minded ideologs working for him and none of them were drinking “Morning Blast” extra-caffeinated coffee. (Or, doing coke?)
I wish he were even more of a slacker...
My grandmother was still pretty dang sharp at 104, though her body was completely worn out and betrayed her.
I believe you mean 26 (twenty-six) months.
However, there is no reason to delay.
I believe you mean 50 (fifty) months.
However, there is no reason to delay.
