That, in addition to survey evidence showing that people are still not wearing masks in public places, led Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for the last three decades, to advocate for a national mask mandate. Previously, Fauci has generally stopped short of saying that the American people should be required to wear masks under a mandate.
The authors of the new University of Washington study arrived at their figures by using a model based on the following assumptions:
If closer to 85% of the U.S. population wore masks in public, under the same assumptions above, the researchers calculated that 96,000 lives would be saved between September 2020 and February 2021.
In the absence of a universal mask mandate, the researchers forecast that approximately 511,000 people total will have died from COVID-19 in the U.S. by February 2021.

I don’t believe any of them. They’re still figuring out just how this virus transmits, we know there’s false positive tests, and deaths attributed to COVID even if it were due to a motorcycle incident.
Then there’s the fact that we’ve been wearing masks for months, did the contraction rate plummet as was predicted? No. Yes, we’re testing more but (as stated we don’t know how many false positives) there’s no evidence that the masks are doing much.
So hearing about these new projections based on everyone having been wrong to date, having bad data, and making incorrect predictions...this is all BS.
And I haven’t even mentioned the potential for political false reporting and fear mongering.
If all we’re doing is stretching out the period of time the virus is around, how does that result in saving lives? It doesn’t mean net fewer people get it.
Given the behavior of this virus it seems obvious what the right policy should be - everyone under 50 in good shape should hang out, spread the virus as fast as possible, get over it, and cross the threshold of “new contractions needed for the virus to survive”...so the older folks and those with health issues can come back out of the woodwork. Sooner vs. later. Of course, I hear today that people that get over it quickly don’t build up antibodies!!! OF COURSE THEY DON’T!!! That would mean such a strategy wouldn’t work!
...then I can look at Sweden. They’ve not locked down like everyone else and their DEATHS PER DAY are in the single digits. This is all insane. It’s all about control and convincing us that the collective supersedes individual, Constitutional, rights.

If people wear a mask in a supermarket, but then go to a bar and talk loudly over the music, where are they going to spread? Also, masks probably don't stop superspreaders from spreading in some settings (call center, meat plant, or any other indoor interaction for more than 10-20 minutes. They probably cut down the spread in shorter interactions. But those are low risk anyway and masks only stop a portion of droplets.
Closing bars would help the most, but we have to live. The bottom line is we have to accept the risk and live with the disease. There's no harm in wearing masks but probably no point in doing so in most cases.

No, that's not correct. The church choir (and 100's of incidents since) proved that it spreads by air.
I got all of that. You do what you need to do to protect your health as best you can and I will do the same. I live in a state (CA) that has more issues than you can shake a stick at... But I would rather petition my Governor for action or change than having to petition the federal governor...

And “modeling”. Check the totals on February 1st to see if we added antother 300,000 deaths without a national mask mandate like this model says. Not plausible.
