The Russians just used lead pencils. Bad idea in a little space capsule - and with no decades-continuing profit on the invention...

(I’m not kidding - someone who worked for NASA gave me my first one in the 1980s, and at the time I was writing voluminously by hand.
The darn thing still writes without fail - no drying out, not used-up even yet.)

I did use mine up, but I was writing sheet music with it, so I probably used the ink faster filling in all those notes.
