Trump Is the Best Candidate for the Illiberal Left
The Atlantic ^ | 10/26/2020 | Yascha Mounk

Posted on 10/26/2020 7:45:50 AM PDT by Borges

A number of influential commentators who firmly opposed Donald Trump in 2016 recently announced their intention to vote for him in 2020. Nearly all of them, including James Lindsay, Danielle Pletka, and Ben Shapiro, blamed illiberalism on the left. As Shapiro said on his popular show, he is planning to vote for Trump because “Democrats have lost their fuc%*%* minds.”

Concerns about illiberal tendencies on the left are not made up out of thin air. Many Democratic politicians have not been as full-throated in their opposition to left-wing political violence as they should be. Parts of the left now seek far-reaching censorship in social media, advocate for employees to be fired for expressing conservative opinions, and are openly hostile to free speech. The likely future mayor of Portland, Oregon, has appeared to glorify mass murderers such as Che Guevara and Mao Zedong on the campaign trail.

This guy is really naïve if he thinks the totalitarianism of the New Left will subside with the Democrats in charge.

The author is a leftwing propagandist.

He thinks calling out the New York Times on its propaganda is a threat to the Constitution.

Most americans at all attentive to politics can recite a long list of Trump’s verbal attacks on democracy. Trump has called for both Hillary Clinton, his competitor in 2016, and Joe Biden, his current adversary, to be locked up.

Never mind the naked corruption behind the Clinton and Biden crime families. Something vastly more corrosive to the body politic than mean Tweets.

In other words, vote for Biden or we’ll step up the violence even further.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

They ought to be locked up. I know that jailing political opponents has a third world aroma, but those two are actually criminals.

Yes, Atlantic, we conservatives and clear thinkers "GET" how it works. Trump makes an off the cuff remark, the MSM takes it literally, misquotes him, then assures us that "what he really means is" like they're some sort of mind-reading enlightened spirit and we're too dumb to figure it out. POS opinion columnists TELL us what to think, HOW we should interpret Trumps words. Case in point: Voting for Trump to stem the rising tide of illiberalism is about as pure an example of cutting off your nose to spite your face as political life can afford. Why??? Because YOU said so.
