Meet your (Chinese) Facebook censors
NY Post ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sohrab Ahmari

China is one of the most censorious societies on Earth. So what better place for Facebook to recruit social media censors?

There are at least half a dozen “Chinese nationals who are working on censorship,” a former Facebook insider told me last week. “So at some point, they [Facebook bosses] thought, ‘Hey, we’re going to get them H-1B visas so they can do this work.’ ”

The insider shared an internal directory of the team that does much of this work. It’s called Hate-Speech Engineering (George Orwell, call your office), and most of its members are based at Facebook’s offices in Seattle. Many have Ph.D.s, and their work is extremely complex, involving machine learning — teaching “computers how to learn and act without being explicitly programmed,” as the techy website DeepAI.org puts it.

When it comes to censorship on social media, that means “teaching” the Facebook code so certain content ends up at the top of your newsfeed, a feat that earns the firm’s software wizards discretionary bonuses, per the ex-insider. It also means making sure other content “shows up dead-last.”

Like, say, a New York Post report on the Biden dynasty’s dealings with Chinese companies.

Don't use Facebook. Don't let your family use Facebook. If you want photos of the grandkids, ask for an email.

I’d say Sohrab Ahmari is just a wee bit peeved about social media messing with him.

‘Hey, we’re going to get them H-1B visas so they can do this work.’ ”

OK, Mr. Trump. Let's cancel those visas and send them all home today.

So the deep state outsourced censorship to the private sector, which in turn outsourced it to the PRC.

Looks like validation for the theory/principle of infiltrating America to influence Americans for a given result.

Minneapolis come to my immediate mind.

While Think-Tank Republicans defended in the most shrill possible manner their right to do so.

AGREED!

Society existed for over 200 years in this country WITHOUT all this “social media” crap. Thousands and thousands of years before that in the countries of all our ancestors.

I’ll never understand some people’s utter dependence on those platforms, nor on Phones, Androids, tablets, etc.

“The latest” is NOT always “the best”.

Don't use Facebook.

Why not? They gonna steal your beer or what?

Don't let your family use Facebook.

Why not? Is your family so stupid that they rely on Facebook for news?
If so, you got bigger problems than Facebook.

The Biden crime family will easily overtake the Clinton Corruptinistas if he is elected.

I know there is corruption in all government, whether left or right, but those 2 are something else.

And that is why less government is better government.

Some of them are. So yeah - I got problems alright. It's downright stupid.

It affects practically every platform and service on the internet. Email and some discussion forums remain unaffected, but for how long?

Remember the big debates in the 90s over government meddling intrusion into the internet? The big fear then was *government*, especially regarding taxes; no one imagined the service providers and platforms themselves as a threat, let alone the Chicoms getting involved.

You do realize that FR is a type of social media?!

Due to the exchange of information on the internet, we are far better informed than our parents about political issues.

The problem with the current social media is that the ultra-left has control of most of the high bandwidth channels. Conservatives do not push back well enough.

Well sheet... I didn't figure that was an actual thing for anybody.

Sorry to hear it.

Our side needs to learn the lesson that the Left lies awake in bed all night, every night, thinking of new little ways to leverage their advantage.

They saw Think-Tank Republicans screaming “Free Market Uber Alles!” and said “Hey, maybe WE can’t censor free speech, but this will let us outsource the job to the private sector!”

It’s like Wesley Snipes’ character in Demolition Man who has a psychological block implanted against killing the protagonist. He simply tosses his gun to a henchman and says “would you please kill this guy?”

All day, too. And they get paid with tax dollars.

Most, if not all, “Think-Tank Republicans“ are part of the Uniparty Establishment and are therefore hostile to the Middle Class and the Constitutional Republic as founded in 1789. They are the enemy.

“no one imagined the service providers and platforms themselves as a threat, let alone the Chicoms getting involved.“

Not quite true, the leftist Democratic Party is behind most of this censorship. As the oldest political party in the United States one could argue that they are part of the government.

I have a gut feeling the outright censorship of The NY Post by Big Tech is going to push a lot of those in the middle to Trump.
