“Mel came from Barnesville MN to Fargo ND for the 1959 softball tournament.
He liked to drink beer as everyone recalls. In the title game the score was 2-2 and 3 men on base. Mel was pitching and drinking beer right and left. He pitched 3 balls in a row.
He had a quick beer in the dug out and went back to pitch. He threw ball 4 and his team lost the 1959 championship.
The winning pitcher grabbed a can of beer and yelled: ‘this is the beer that made Mel Famey walk us.’”
