Newsom: California Will ‘Independently Review’ Vaccine Approved by FDA

During a press conference on Monday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) announced the creation of a Scientific Safety Review Workgroup that will review vaccines that are approved by the FDA.

Newsom said, “California, today, is launching now, more formally, a Scientific Safety Review, a workgroup of 11 individuals, experts in their field. These are top health experts that will independently review any FDA-approved vaccines. The question I often get is, are you going to take someone’s word for it, as it relates to vaccines? Of course, we don’t take anyone’s word for it. We will do our own, independently-reviewed process, with our world-class experts that just happen to live here in the state of Californ

How are they going to review a vaccine unless they do their own double-blind studies? Anything less is foolishness and a waste of time.

This guy is drunk with his perceived power. If people want to be vaccinated by a federally approved a vaccine, he has ZERO POWER to stop them.

I resent that.

I can’t believe the residents of California are willing to put up with this jerk. Can’t believe they can’t get enough signatures to recall him.

I’m in California. California has a bad record with science. These are the same people who put MTBE in our gasoline despite “real” scientists warning of the harm it would cause. They put MTBE in and gas burned per mile increased, it destroyed diesel engines, and it polluted our water supply. These are the same people whose policies of “no one can touch the forests” have caused these massive wildfires to occur despite people pointing out their idiocy for the last 40 years. And on and on.

"As a federalist, I don’t have a big problem with this."

Agreed. However, wondering what would happen if CA rejects an FDA approved vaccine and CA residents get it anyway (ex. from Nevada). What does the state gov't do to them if anything?

Another scenario, CA rejects the vaccine, do CA residents who are citizens of the United States have standing to sue the state gov't for depriving them access to medicine approved by the federal government?

Newsom likes to pretend that California is a sovereign state. Next he’ll try to print money.

Sure lump all Californians together, no bias there. What are your views on Washington, Oregon, Colorado, New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, Hawaii, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, etc.

Oh I forgot you great intellects believe that California is responsible for all the other states homegrown insanity.

He has ambitions to be a dictator it would seem. Anyway, I would have no trust in a CA review of licensing.

What if a Harris/Biden administration forbad the vaccine? I am alarmed at NY and California suggesting they may have state wide bans on the vaccine. This will leave the most vulnerable with no hope of returning to life as normal. Is this merely a way for states to lower the cost of caring for the elderly?

California needs to be broken apart. That may cause more harm than good but California the way it stands and is governed is insane and a true virus of the nation.

The “number of cases” junk is so silly.

I’ve seen the unmarked mass graves they had to dig to dispose of the bodies from the Spanish Flu. My great grandfather is buried in one. That’s the kind of thing that happens in a real pandemic.

The only mass grave we’re digging now is to bury our economy in.

what would happen if CA rejects an FDA approved vaccine and CA residents get it anyway (ex. from Nevada). What does the state gov't do to them if anything?

Good question. I suppose that unless CA specifically passes a state law forbidding residents to obtain those services elsewhere, they couldn't do anything. I'm not sure of the constitutionality of that sort of law and I'd suppose the feds could probably have jurisdiction based on the interstate commerce clause.

Another scenario, CA rejects the vaccine, do CA residents who are citizens of the United States have standing to sue the state gov't for depriving them access to medicine approved by the federal government?

Another good one. I'm no expert but isn't that the gist of what Roe v Wade was about? State makes it illegal, citizen sues gov't for depriving them access to the the procedure citing their right to privacy in medical matters? Maybe even Griswold v Connecticut where a state banned contraceptives?

Purely from a precedent standpoint, I'd guess that lawsuit would have standing and would easily be able to come up with a plaintiff directly affected by the ban.

But if you believe Roe v Wade and/or Griswold ruling were wrong, you could argue that since privacy/medical procedures aren't specifically mentioned in the Constitution that they fall to the states.

It's an interesting thing to think about.

As a federalist, I don't believe they should have that power.

I am alarmed at NY and California suggesting they may have state wide bans on the vaccine.

I find it alarming too. I only advocate that powers not specifically mentioned in the Constitution should be left to the states. At the state level, citizens have more power to petition and change their governments, decide what kind of governance they want, and serve as a positive or negative example to governments in other states (laboratory of democracy type of thing).

Is this merely a way for states to lower the cost of caring for the elderly?

It could be. I'm of the impression that they just want to delay handing the President any sort of victory on anything even if it costs lives. And if Biden/Harris were to win they'd likely have a vaccine approved in CA by late January, early February 2021.
