As the Coronavirus Surges, a New Culprit Emerges: Pandemic Fatigue.
New York Times ^ | October 17, 2020 | Julie Bosman, Sarah Mervosh and Marc Santora

CHICAGO — When the coronavirus began sweeping around the globe this spring, people from Seattle to Rome to London canceled weddings and vacations, cut off visits with grandparents and hunkered down in their homes for what they thought would be a brief but essential period of isolation.

But summer did not extinguish the virus. And with fall has come another dangerous, uncontrolled surge of infections that in parts of the world is the worst of the pandemic so far.

The United States surpassed eight million known cases this past week, and reported more than 70,000 new infections on Friday, the most in a single day since July. Eighteen states added more new coronavirus infections during the seven-day stretch ending on Friday than in any other week of the pandemic.

In Europe, cases are rising and hospitalizations are up. Britain is imposing new restrictions, and France has placed cities on “maximum alert,” ordering many to close all bars, gyms and sports centers. Germany and Italy set records for the most new daily cases. And leaders in the Czech Republic described their health care system as “in danger of collapsing,” as hospitals are overwhelmed and more deaths are occurring than at any time in the pandemic.

The virus has taken different paths through these countries as leaders have tried to tamp down the spread with a range of restrictions. Shared, though, is a public weariness and a growing tendency to risk the dangers of the coronavirus, out of desire or necessity: With no end in sight, many people are flocking to bars, family parties, bowling alleys and sporting events much as they did before the virus hit, and others must return to school or work as communities seek to resuscitate economies.

And that is just disgusting and horrifying and it completely breaks my heart.

brings tears to my eyes.

There was a guy on this board who went by the name of farmer dean. He had fought sepsis from colon surgery for three years but was losing the battle finally some months back.

His wife didn’t see him the whole month before. I spoke to him on a Sunday evening and he said he was tired and needed to go to sleep.

And he never woke up again.

His wife’s voice and face should have been the last thing he saw. it broke my heart

My prayers are with any of you folks going through this. And any elderly people you have in homes

I don’t know anything about pandemic fatigue but I do know I’m dying of a terminal case of cabin fever.

I found out today one of my best friends is in the hospital and not expected to live. He is conscious, but I cannot go see him due to COVID.

Makes me madder than than I can say. I hope the people who are exploiting this rot in Hell.

The daily death toll (as determined from the seven day moving average) is in fact decreasing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yep, nationally it’s been falling since mid August:
There has been a number of medical papers saying that 40% of human common colds are caused by a coronavirus which does confer some memory cell immunity.
There have also been articles saying “viruses gonna virus” and that there is nothing you can do to stop it. Maybe slow it down a bit, but at a HUGE societal cost.
The “15 days” was absolutely preposterous when it was first said. Everybody knows that epidemics and pandemics take months and sometimes two years to fade away.
They are in the US. Fatalities are WAY DOWN here in the US as doctors become better at treating patients and people are now more likely to get tested if they come down with any possible symptoms.
Younger people getting it. Vulnerable people better protected. But the biggest factor could be mutations making it more contagious and less lethal.
Sweden had this right. Period.
Sweden had an 8% economic drop in the second quarter, same as us. But they had it right about getting the spread over and done with while protecting the vulnerable. They didn't protect their vulnerable very well though. Five times as much death as Denmark, eight times Finland and 10 times Norway. The difference is their younger people can now get on with their lives.
It isn't a "surge" ... it's not a "new spike". You see, when you lock people away and restrict their normal human interactions the virus will -- temporarily -- not be able to infect as many people in a given timeframe. Then, when things are relaxed a little (through the gracious benificence of the imperial governors), the virus picks up where it left off.
It's really quite simple, you see. THE VIRUS DOES NOT GIVE UP AND GO AWAY DURING THE TIME PEOPLE ARE LOCKED AWAY OR RESTRICTED IN THEIR HUMAN INTERACTIONS. It just "waits" for us to come back together in some semblence of normality before -- in the absence of an effective vaccine -- it runs its normal course again. This is what viruses do.
Democrat Party/CCP shutdown to keep Trump from being elected. They share a common enemy.
Additionally, a large amount of the positives that are asymptomatic are probably false positives. Some tests are so bad that some, like NFL players, are required to take several tests to get the best 2-3, 3-5, etc. before the results are accepted.
Five times as much death as Denmark, eight times Finland and 10 times Norway.
Things are still playing out and these numbers could shift substantially if Sweden’s neighbors experience a late surge in infections.
Yeah. Makes me want to throw something...I won’t, but inside, feel like I want to smash something.
One of my dearest friends, and in the past years as he has battled, he has not wanted any of us to see him, and I missed him very much.
Now I can’t even go to his bedside and tell him how I feel about him, and all the joy he has given me in this life. He is going to go...and I can’t do that...grasp his hand and look into his face.
It really really hurts. But thank you. I know you can imagine it.
Joe could lock down the country.
A Dem congress would suspend Habeas Corpus if he asked.
Someone should ask him if he would do that.
