Sen. Ben Sasse unloads on Trump in call with constituents: 'A TV-obsessed narcissistic individual'

Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., ripped President Trump in a phone call with constituents, saying the commander-in-chief "kisses dictators' butts," "sells out our allies," mistreats women and "spends like a drunken sailor."

“What the heck were any of us thinking that selling a TV-obsessed narcissistic individual to the American people was a good idea? It is not a good idea," Sasse said in a recent telephone town hall with his constituents. "I think we are staring down the barrel of a blue tsunami and we’ve got to hold the Senate and that’s what I’m focused on.”

Sasse's nine-minute diatribe against Trump was first reported by the Washington Examiner, which obtained an audio recording of the town hall. Sasse was responding to a question from a constituent about the senator's relationship with Trump who asked: "Why do you have to criticize him so much?”

Sasse said he's found common ground with Trump on certain things, such as nominating conservative judges to the courts, but then he laid out a long list of faults and said it was important to "level" with Nebraskans.

Trump "mocks evangelicals behind closed doors," mistreats women and "flirted with white supremacists," Sasse said.

Trump mishandled the coronavirus pandemic, botched foreign policy and sought to profit off the presidency, the senator continued.

Exactly. I keep thinking of that scripture “a house divided among itself cannot stand”. Trump is surrounded with traitors.

How about you go to blazes?

I mean really how idiotic. Is this what FR will become, supporting leftist democrats?

IF you’re a conservative then OBVIOUSLY it would be more likely to primary him in the republican party. Unlikely but more likely than making a democrat become a conservative.

This guy is trying to kneecap the President with 2 weeks to go. I’ll gladly see him lose. I believe the Repukes can hold Maine, NC and pickup Michigan. I’d gladly see them lose Nebraska. It’ll stiffen the spines of those who remain and be a message to those who try to destroy Trump from within. My biggest disappointment with Trump is that he didn’t try to crush certain Repukes in the primary

Excellent time to reference that passage. Abraham Lincoln quoted it but America still went ahead with the first Civil War.

Sasse is a former college president and got the job at a young age. College presidents are in the habit of making hollow, moralistic statements, and assuming that somebody is listening to them.

Also, he seems like the guy who did all of the conservative movement seminars, internships, and cruises, and is now appalled that someone like him isn't in power.

Having degrees from both Harvard and Yale doesn't help either.

It wouldn’t surprise me if he didn’t have Presidential ambitions. After all, he’s got the answers to all the problems (though none of the responsibilities), and he wants to appeal to the never Trumpers since he seldom criticizes anyone else. He’s just another self affected db, and their numbers are legion in DC.

I don’t think Nebraska farmers, their families and all people in the farm support industries and their families will much appreciate Sasse’s spewage about Trump.

It’s like talking trash about coal in WV.

IF I could have a sensible conversation with Sasse, I would simply want to ask him - Hey Benny, Tell me - how do you think that half of the American masses have been believing all of the lies and crap since at least the Clinton period?? Are you that naive to really want to be a classic Republican with his head in the sand and ignore the Cultural impact that TV and Media has had to push the lies to a delusional people? Why do you think the gaslighting continues?

Trump knows the power of the medium, and has been a. paying attention to it and b. using it far more masterfully than any other Republican. That’s not being narcissistic. That’s aware of the culture we live in.

I can’t recall the last time a DemoncRAT senator turned on their party like some of the gop-e does.

When a district has a powerful Democrat machine or incumbent, and a candidate can’t get in any other way, sometimes they just call themselves Republican so they can have a platform and try to say just enough to win. There are a lot of such in public office.

Also, obviously, the GOP does a poor job of ongoing education for incumbents and newly-elected officials, or vetting and training of candidates. Even worse than their self-defense strategies.

Let’s see: The GOP stands to lose at least three senate seats (McSally in AZ; Collins in ME; and Gardner in CO) and probably five (Graham in SC and Ernst in IA), with only 1 assured pick-up (Alabama), and a possible second pick-up (Michigan). I would much prefer to lose Sasse and keep Ernst. Either way, either the GOP survives with a razor-thin majority or it loses the senate.
