At 2016 rallies, Trump usually had something that looked like a folded piece of paper in his inner coat pocket. It included facts about the locale where he was speaking and the names of local politicians. Other than that he just spoke from his mind and his heart. He is necessarily more focused now but can weave back and forth from teleprompter to ad lib better than anyone else.

If you get outside of the cities in Michigan, it’s more like the Deep South. I remember when I lived there, I saw more Confederate Flags than in a lot of the Southern States.
