Merriam-Webster redefines the term 'sexual preference' as OFFENSIVE after Amy Coney Barrett used it

Merriam-Webster dictionary's 5th definition of the word 'preference' cites 'orientation' and uses the example of 'sexual preference'. On Wednesday the definition was updated to explain the term is offensive. Amy Coney Barrett was slammed for using the term during her SCOTUS hearings. On Tuesday Senator Mazie Hirono said Barrett's appointment to the Supreme Court would pose a threat to same-sex marriage law Obergefell v. Hodges. She pointed out Barrett used the 'offensive' term twice in the hearing. Hirono said it is used by anti-LGBTQ activists to suggest sexuality is a choice. Barrett later apologized for causing offense to the community, but has refused to disclose her stance on Obergefell v. Hodges.

The change came hours after Democratic Senator Mazie Hirono said Barrett's appointment to the Supreme Court would pose a threat to LGBTQ rights and used the judge's use of the term 'sexual preference' as evidence of this concern.

Hirono said the phrase is highly offensive to the LGBTQ community and is used by 'anti-LGBTQ activists' to suggest sexuality is a choice rather than an unchangeable part of an individual's identity.

Democrats have voiced concerns that Barrett - a devout Christian who is part of a conservative religious sect that insists women obey their husbands in all matters - will push to reverse LGBTQ rights if she is appointed to the court, as she refuses to answer questions about her stance on America's same-sex marriage laws.

Feinstein asked Barrett if she would ‘vote to roll back hard-fought freedoms and protections for the LGBT community.’

Barrett is a conservative and cites Justice Scalia as her mentor.

Scalia voted against same-sex marriage in the Obergefell v. Hodges case.

Barrett responded to Feinstein’s question using the term sexual preference twice.

‘I have no agenda,’ she said.

‘I do want to be clear that I have never discriminated on the basis of sexual preference and would not discriminate on the basis of sexual preference.’

Hirono later said she was ‘disappointed’ with Barrett’s refusal to answer the question about Obergefell v. Hodges but warned that her use of the phrase ‘sexual preference’ spoke volumes of Barrett’s views around LGBTQ rights.

She said ‘the LGBQT community should be rightly concerned’ about her joining the Supreme Court given her use of the phrase which suggests she believes same-sex attraction is a choice that can be changed.

‘I was disappointed that you wouldn’t give a direct answer of whether you agreed with the majority in that case or if you instead you agreed with your mentor Justice Scalia that no such right exists within the constitution,’ said Hirono.

‘So even though you didn’t give a direct answer I think your response did speak volumes.

This is exactly what was described in 1984.

The destruction of words is a beautiful thing.

Deep State is totally busted in their elaborate narrative hoax but people who only view mainstream news media will never know.

I must mention that with everything going on in our country and world as a whole, why the hell does what goes on behind closed doors in one’s bedroom matter in relation to whether or not someone qualifies to sit on the Supreme Court? What or who some degenerate wants to hump means zero compared to the economy, our right to bear arms, public safety, freedom of speech whether it offends the delicate leftists of not...our armed forces...let’s not forget freedom of religion.

Trump must win, and Barrett must be appointed.

Thanks, and I must say FR’s search engine is not very, good. I searched for Merriam-Webster to be sure this article was NOT already posted...and it did not return anything to the search. They need to take a look at it.

Orwell is very much alive and kicking.

1984 was supposed to be a warning, not an instruction manual!

'Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed, will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten. Already, in the Eleventh Edition, we're not far from that point. But the process will still be continuing long after you and I are dead. Every year fewer and fewer words, and the range of consciousness always a little smaller.

I read on Daily Mail’s comment section that Ruth B. Ginsberg would use the phrase sexual preference, and the poster questioned why the left didn’t slam her for the same thing?

***sexuality is a choice rather than an unchangeable part of an individual’s identity.***

Sexuality is a behavior, and behaviors can be modified. Therefore, sexuality is a choice.

LOL! You are correct. I guess sometimes it works and sometimes not. I’ve used it and gotten suspended before for “Learn to search” even though I did. Funny stuff.

This is simply ridiculous. There is NOTHING offensive about the term "sexual preference." Even if you subscribe to the belief that sexuality is an immutable trait, you still have preferences within that trait. Some people prefer blondes over brunettes, chubby over thin, etc.

Besides, progressives contradict this assertion themselves when they say that human sexuality can change from day to day. How do they square there is no sexual preference with folks claiming to be "non-binary?" Because, "shut up, bigot!"

Yup, I’ve been suspended for the same. Once it was something I posted that had been posted by somebody else 24 hrs prior! I mean, most folks go through a page or 2, but they don’t go back through a full day of articles.

I love FR, but think there’s a rogue moderator in the mix on a power trip or something.

“Anti-LGBTQ activists” are a figment of Hirono’s imagination. I guess to her anyone who isn’t loudly cheerleading for gay causes is an “anti-LGBTQ activist.”
