The world's richest king, his mysterious fortune and the protesters who want answers

The crown prince of Thailand’s third marriage unraveled in lurid headlines: The princess was stripped of her titles, her parents and brothers jailed over vague corruption allegations, her uncle purged from his senior police post.

Then the heir to the throne had to finesse a divorce settlement.

Luckily for the prince, he had access to one of the largest royal fortunes in the world, a secretive holding company laden with stakes in blue-chip Thai companies and prime land in the heart of Bangkok. The company covered the payment, reportedly close to $6 million.

Two years later, in 2016, the prince ascended to the throne. One of King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s first major acts was to transfer all the holdings in the vast company, known as the Crown Property Bureau, to his personal ownership, giving him control of more wealth than the reported riches of the Saudi king, the sultan of Brunei and the British royal family combined.

Two things to understand about Thailand 1) there is blatant corruption 2) it is against the law to say/publish derogatory statements against the Royal Family or the Buddhist religion.

Having lived in Thailand for 8 years I kind of appreciated the corruption, cops pull you over you bribe them with 200 baht ($6), need an immediate visa bride immigration 10 - 25,000 baht ($300 - $800). As opposed to the USA where the democrats blatantly get away with corruption while us little people have to obey the law.

I went to college with a person pretty high up in Internal Security in Thailand.

He was the calmest, most unassuming person you could ever meet. I don’t think I ever heard him say a mean word about anyone. I am not in the habit of calling men, “sweet.” But he was a sweet guy.

I am guessing he’s “come out of his shell.”

A reliably corrupt country is fun to live in, if you have the means to pay the bribes...

The USA is not reliably corrupt for anyone with a means of less than a hundred million dollars...

The Thais are always smiling (frequently with a finger in their nose up to the second joint ... don’t ask, seems to be a cultural thing), polite, and accommodating. But insult their king, their country, or their religion (you’ll never see more Buddhist temples in a smaller area anywhere) and they’ll calmly gut you like a hog. There’s a reason why the Europeans never even tried to conquer and colonize after gobbling up every place around them.
