The CDC does not count COVID deaths the same way they count influenza deaths.

When COVID is a co-morbidity with pneumonia or ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome), the CDC instructs doctors to classify 100% of those deaths as exclusively COVID deaths.

When influenza is a co-morbidity with pneumonia or ARDS, less than 10% of those deaths are classified as influenza deaths.

The USA had severe influenza outbreaks in 1957 (116,000 dead) and 1968 (100,000 dead), in spite of flu shots being available.

Adjusted for population growth, and adjusted for pneumonia and ARDS deaths, the influenza death toll in those two years would be close to 300,000 in 2020.
