Infection Rates in Neighborhoods With Low Voter Turnout, Many Bars, Few Trees Could Slow California's Reopening Under New 'Equity Metric'
Reason ^ | 10/09/20 | Christian Britschgi

Starting this week, California will require counties to meet certain equity requirements before they're permitted to reopen more businesses and social activities.

Proponents of this equity-focused approach say it is necessary to prevent the most vulnerable communities from being left behind as the state digs its way out of the pandemic. Critics call it a deeply flawed and potentially illegal means of determining which areas are safe to reopen, and they argue that it will only slow California's recovery.

"Our entire state has come together to redouble our efforts to reduce the devastating toll COVID-19 has had on our Latino, Black and Pacific Islander communities," said Acting State Public Health Officer Dr. Erica Pan in a press release. "This isn't just a matter of higher cases in these communities—it is an issue of life and death that is hurting all Californians."

"Even if we are talking about issues of genuine inequity, there is no justification for the governor to wield emergency powers and restrict the most basic liberties of citizens for purposes of equity," counters Assemblyman Kevin Kiley (R–Folsom). "It is an extremely dangerous thing to impose these restrictions that are only supposed to exist for genuine emergencies, genuine public health purposes, but instead use them for a social agenda."

Don't you LOVE the word "permitted"? Permitted?? What ever happened to the quaint notion of FREEDOM??

Fewer trees can actually be a good thing. I watched a documentary the other day, and it showed just how rude and nasty trees could be.

This came out two weeks ago - but has received little media attention (I live in So Cal) - because the media agree with the premise of everyone staying shut until equal rates of COVID infection are realized.

Any wonder why businesses are closing permanently or are fleeing the state?

I drive through town and see lots and lots of “for lease” signs on businesses or “closed” signs that have been up for seven months now.

Good going, idiots, driving your tax base right out of the state.

I has to get a lot worse before even a small portion of the CA population will begin to apply common sense.

It is red, red, red outside the areas of San Francisco, LA and the San Diego area - but those are huge population centers.

California is full of sheeple who do whatever the guru Gavin Newsom tells them - the rest of us are fleeing.

Lab Coat Tyranny: California is using “public health” as a rationale to push progressive political goals.
City Journal ^ | 10/9/2020 | Christopher F. Rufo
Posted on 10/9/2020, 3:26:26 PM by RightGeek

Public health authorities in California have unveiled a “Blueprint for a Safer Economy” that requires counties to meet new “health equity metrics” in order to emerge from the current Covid-19 lockdowns. It’s a broad experiment in social justice. Under the plan, counties must reduce “disparities in levels of transmission” in “low-income, Black, Latino, [and] Pacific Islander” communities before they can move forward with reopening. In effect, local businesses must remain closed until local bureaucrats are satisfied that ill-defined racial quotas have been met.

The underlying assumption of the blueprint is that race-based coronavirus disparities are the result of “systemic racism,” despite zero evidence that the state’s coronavirus policies have been discriminatory. The plan ignores potential differences in culture, behavior, and underlying health, resting instead on the premise that racism is the driving force behind every disparate outcome. The blueprint also subverts the democratic process. Unelected public health officials are restricting essential freedoms, including mobility, worship, and economic activity, without deliberation by the state legislature or the possibility of review or appeal.

Unfortunately, the California blueprint is just part of a broader pattern of state governments using public health as a rationale for seizing power. Throughout the pandemic, blue-state politicians have appealed to science as justification for long-term economic lockdowns, mask mandates, and other emergency measures, regardless of whether these policies have been sanctioned by state legislatures or voters. Science becomes the highest authority; citizens must obey.

As I recall, more Californians voted for Trump last time than all but a handful of other states.
