Federal judge blocks Gov. Abbott’s order limiting number of mail ballot drop-off sites in Texas

AUSTIN -- A federal judge in Austin blocked Gov. Greg Abbott’s order limiting the number of mail ballot drop-off sites a county can have.

In an order issued late Friday night, U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman of Austin put on hold Abbott’s order thereby allowing counties to have multiple mail ballot drop-off sites.

The order said agents of the state are blocked from taking any action to inhibit election administrators from offering more than one drop-off location for ballots in their respective counties.

The decision, issued by a Barack Obama appointee, is a blow to Abbott who argued the drop-off limit is aimed at preventing voter fraud. It is a major victory for voting rights groups and voters who decried the Republican governor’s move as a voter suppression tactic. The decision is likely to be appealed to the more conservative U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Abbott issued his order on Oct. 1, nearly two weeks after counties had started sending mail ballots to voters. Some counties, like Harris, which covers more than 1,700 square miles, had announced multiple locations where voters could drop off their mail ballots.

Other counties, like Travis and Fort Bend, followed Harris' lead in announcing multiple drop-off sites. But Abbott’s order, which altered a previous order he had issued in July, limited counties to one drop-off location.

Of course, a federal judge. States are non-existent now, you know.

Yep. Nothing but appendages of the federal government. Even though states created the damn thing.

Some Courtrooms and Chambers are just begging for a cattle drive to be run through.

Gee, I thought Roberts said that judges are as non partisan and pure as wind driven snow.

Notice though that the unbiased reporter failed to describe the Obama appointee as a liberal, whereas he had no problem labeling the 5th circus as conservative.

Isn’t it odd that judge intervention is always a liberal thing?

You’re assuming that they will rule on it within the next three weeks. There’s no guarantee of that.

The “judge” is an open ankle-grabber.

These lawless judges were installed by the progressive left for a reason. Obama judges are the worst of the crop.

Gard each drop-off box. This is something Trump supporters can do.

So far regarding extending mail-in ballot return days, it hasn't been.

Thank God, do you know how hard it would of been to stuff 700,000 fake mail in ballots into one box!

I don’t understand Abbot’s thinking on this. Surely a locked drop-off box is more secure than a postal mail drop. Ballot pickup will then be by county election personnel, perhaps even with “election watcher” ride-alongs, rather than postal (read union) employees.

I would think more drop boxes than fewer would be desirable.
